Q: How can I prevent getting calls from number that are not in my address book?

Hi,

How can I prevent getting calls from numbers that are not in my address book?

I would like to allow only calls from people I have already stored in my address book... all other calls are to be blocked (i.e., the phone should no ring for unknown numbers, which are all numbers not associated with any contact in the address book).

Thank you for any idea

You can not physically stop people from calling you.. the only other way would be to block the numbers but if youy dont know what number is going to call you there is no way to block.

See my post. If tele-marketer calls, you can complain through the government website.

    Hi btroxell!

Yeah well that you cannot prevent someone else to call you is true, but it is not really what I am aiming: My aim would be to surpress the call on MY side of the connection, not on THEIR side of the connection. That is, my iPhone should not show any sign of the call (esp. not ring) when a caller tries to connect to me without submitting his/her callerID. It is possible to do. One way would be to set use phone setting or apps (on my side). I have used such in app in the past (iBlacklist) and it surpressed all unknown calls without a trace – but it requires a jailbroken iPhone... So I am looking for other ways to get the same result?

    Hi ckuan!

Thank you for the link. I will certainly do that.

I would still look for a more general solution because there are all sorts of calls that I would not want to show up on my phone (e.g., calls that should not go to my private line but my office, oversee calls in the middle of the night because people don't realize the time zone differences, etc).

I currently have an Android phone (Samsung) and I am able to do this successfully.  There is an option on there to block everything not in your contacts list, whether the number calling is displayed or unknown.  it's great.  And until Apple find a way to include this on the I-phone, I won't be buying one.  I would really like an I-phone but I like this function too much.

The only response that works, to set up "do not disturb" at all times, is not good enough. This blocks all alerts as well.

The response to put your number on the "do not call list" is also useless. That is widely ignored. What we really need is to be able to block all _phone calls_ from anyone not in our contacts list, and have them go directly to voicemail. Apple: Can you _please_ provide this? If not, telephone service will eventually become completely useless.

You do realize doing that  can be extremely dangerous and potentially illegal?

What happens if someone you do know calls you in an emergency from a number you don't have in contacts because its an emergency and it was the only phone available?

What happens if that person then dies because you, having blocked all calls chose not to take the call and as such they could not get help because of you?  You could be held responsible for that.

The reason no such feature exists, is because there is no way to guarantee with 100% certainty that call from an unknown number is at the same time from an unknown person and this can then bring about disastrous results with potentially legal consequences to not only you, but also the company, be it Apple, or the carrier that allowed this.
