How can I delete a user or guest account on Mavericks?
I have a guest and another user account set up on my Mac. I tried deleting them, but couldn't.
MacBook Pro (13-inch Mid 2012), OS X Mavericks (10.9)

To delete an user, open System Preferences > Users & Groups, choose the user you want to remove in the sidebar and press the - button. Note that you must be an administrator user to do this.
You can't remove a guest user, but you can disable it. Open System Preferences > Users & Groups, and press the padlock at the bottom left corner of the System Preferences window. Then, select Guest User and untick "Allow guests to log in to this computer".
Note that OS X requires that you have got at least one user account. If you only have got one user account and a guest, you can only disable this guest user
This doesn't work for me. I am not even able to select "Guest User" because it is grayed out...there is no response from clicking on "Guest User". Underneath it is, "Enabled, Managed". Furthermore, when Mavericks MacBook Pro computer sleeps, wake-up login window opens with "Guest User" being the default user. Very frustrating....tired of having to jump through many hoops just to log back in. Seems to have occurred coincidentally after last Mavericks update a few days ago.
Yes I did. All the conditions and actions stated by Mende1 above have been done.
I'm getting a feeling that an Adobe software update is involved in some convoluted way. I keep getting an Adobe message at log-in and it brings me to the Guest User log-in page although I have no desire to have any guest user use the Adobe CC software involved in the update.....that's why I don't care to have ANY guest user account. In the rare instance I let someone use my computer, I'm nearby, and they can use my account....but, that's extremely rare.
The default page for log-in after sleep is my account; that is checked in the User & Group Preferences. However, my computer is now opening on the Guest User page despite that.

Is the Guest User account currently logged in? If so, switch to it, and log it out (Log out is under the Apple menu). No account can be deleted if it is currently logged in.
Thanks Király. I had been trying to select User from the Menu on the right side of the Menu Bar by the Searchlight showing the Current User. That was confusing since both Guest User and my Account name were both checked, but, one of them was grayed-out. I logged out Guest User under the Apple Menu as you suggested and then was able to disable the Guest User account in Users & Groups Preferences...that solved it.
Thanks
