Wifi disconnects after sleep and takes long time to reconnect with Mavericks

Since upgrading to Mavericks whenever my MacBook Air goes to sleep (if I leave it idle) the wifi disconnects and it can take up to a minute to reconnect when it wakes.

Basically what happens is, as soon as it wakes I have no internet connection, the WiFi indicator is pulsing, meaning it is searching for networks, but it takes ages to find any, then after some time, usually between 30 secs and a minute all the networks in my building pop up and it instantly at that point reconnects to my WiFi network.

It is incredibly frustrating I was so used to the Mac being an instant on tool, now it takes longer to get on the internet than booting up my windows PC.

Any ideas what might have caused this?

I think olivierventurini was replying to the concept of reordering the network items or deleting the plist file or soemthing like that.

Your work-around will probably be helpful to various sets of people at various times, as like I said, this problem has been around since 2006 at least. That being the case, I don't have a ton of hope Apple is going to fix it. You might just get lucky enough to be in the set of users who don't experience it during certain releases of OSX (as I am currenly).

I found my real problem. My hard drive was going bad. After replacing it, I'm fine.

...I don't know what's going on with this forum. I just replied to my earlier post and it took me somewhere that I can't even find that post -- can only find my reply. Sorry about that. I was hoping this post would clarify my previous. Maybe you guys can find it without my help.

If I could find it, I would mark the problem solved.

Hi All,

I have read this entire thread, and have come to the conclusion that I am not inconvenienced enough yet, to go into the Terminal and fix the issue that way, if it even does work, and none of the other solutions are permanent, either.

I just got this refurbed MBP (2011) last week, and am having the same problems running Mavericks as everyone else, which I upgraded from Montain Lion when I got the machine.

I use only one bluetooth accessory, a magic mouse, so that eliminates more than one bluetooth device as the culprit, and/or 3rd party devices.

I use an Airport, but it is the old flying saucer version, which is not supported since Snow Leopard (Ihave a MBP and Mini bith still running in that OS), so that may qualify it as a '3rd party router' in this instance. It sounds like another solution would be for me to get a new Airport, which I will do eventually.

At this point, after reading 26 pages regarding this issue, I am content to just reconnect by turning Wi-Fi off, then on and selecting my network. And sending a report to Apple. Or, since I am using a laptop, turn Bluetooth off and on.

I did try moving my Network services order so Wi-Fi is at the top of the list, but when I checked this morning to see if the order had changed back, the entire network window was blank, even though the Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are on. 😐 Not sure where to go with that, except leave it all be.

In my case it definitely is a Bluetooth related problem. When deactivating BT my MBPs WIfi had no problem to re-connect after awakening.

Although there was no com.apple.Bluetooth.plist to delete I trashed all BT related .plist files.

Unfortunately, after turning on BT again and sleep/wake the Mac - WLAN was dropped and unable to connect.

So, until this bug is fixed I will leave BT OFF (and not able to use my "magic" mouse)

Apple's support here is absolutely terrible. Hundreds of people reporting the issue, but Apple support don't even acknowledge it as an issue.

I had an issue with my Android phone which I'm sure was a bug. Logged it as a bug, Google investigated it, worked with me, found the cause and put a solution into the next Android release. Then to top it off, they sent me a £50 gift card. We're not even getting acknowledgement of the issue from Apple and their products are 3x more expensive!!

Hi everyone. I've been having this issue for awhile too and finally got annoyed and decided to find a fix. Happy to say i found this link which fixed my issue. It seems like it is related to bluetooth Now wifi works perfectly after sleep.

How to trash a bad OS X Bluetooth preferences file

  1. Go to your Mac's Finder.
  2. Click on the File menu and select New Finder Window
  3. Click on your Mac's icon in the Devices list in the sidebar
  4. Open Macintosh HD (or whatever your Mac's hard drive may be named)
  5. Open Library
  6. Open Preferences
  7. Find the file called "com.apple.Bluetooth.plist"
  8. Move it to your desktop. It should copy there.
  9. Remove it from the Preferences folder by dragging it into the Trash. The Mac will tell you that Finder wants to make changes. Type your password to allow this.
  10. Restart your Mac.

Yes, as far as I've seen, the only *real* solution is to turn the wifi off/on, or the BT off before sleeping and on after wake... or automate that process in some way. And, then be patient and *hope* the next OSX revision fixes it... and if it does, hope the next OSX update doesn't break it again.

@ siamless & sir_kw

Yes, deleting the prefs file (plist) has helped some people, but from everything I've heard, it's usually only temporary. siamless, you can turn BT on after the wifi is connected again, or if you forget, just toggle wifi off and back on. While an inconvenience, you certainly shouldn't have to stop using your magic mouse.

@ Evostance

While I agree this is a frustrating problem, let's put things in perspective here. First, it isn't *that* big of a deal in the grand scheme of problems. Second, Apple HAS fixed this problem dozens of times over the last ~8 years. They just have never totally irradiated it, or completely gotten to the the root of it. Third, Apple is renowned for their excellent products and customer service, Google, not so much. While I've not owned an Android device yet, I *do* use a whole host of paid and free Google services, and typically their support is either non-existent or quite poor at real solutions where it is provided.

Honestly, fixing what they have tried to repair over years does not indicate anything excellent about this company...

Sorry, but you haven't fixed anything is hundreds of people have this issue. Also, Google do have excellent customer service - you just need to find it first which isn't the easiest of things to do. Something I find a little ironic from a search company. Either way, Apple need to pay attention to their customers and actually get of their high horse and fix this. The whole "you're holding it wrong" attitude comes to mind..

Back to the actual issue. This is 100% related to Bluetooth in some way. Whilst I was at my girlfriends house I turned Bluetooth off. I came home later that evening and turned my laptop on. It connected to the WiFi straight away and was working. I turned Bluetooth on to connect my mouse & keyboard - all of a sudden I've lost my WiFi connectivity..

I have noticed that the wifi diesn't disconnect during sleep, but rather a split second after I open the lid and it wakes, sometimes the lag is long enough for a page to refresh before it disconnects.

I have also noticed that the time between disconnecting and reconnecting is shorter than I remember. At least I don't find myself turning it off and on anymore.

I still haven't tried any of the 'fixes' temporary or permanent, and my set up has remained the same: Airport Extreme and Mighty Mouse, no other Bluetooth peripherals.

Are you sure isnt a interferences trouble with Radio-Frequencies?
Did you use some kind of external adapters? Any kind.

I solved many month ago with my imac late 2013 i7 512 SSD (maverick) and wifi disconnections, I got two external adapters hdmi and eSata wrapped with aluminium foils and I havent any disconnection by wifi or BT, solved totally.
Free to trust me 🙂
