Q: Wifi disconnects after sleep and takes long time to reconnect with Mavericks

Since upgrading to Mavericks whenever my MacBook Air goes to sleep (if I leave it idle) the wifi disconnects and it can take up to a minute to reconnect when it wakes.

Basically what happens is, as soon as it wakes I have no internet connection, the WiFi indicator is pulsing, meaning it is searching for networks, but it takes ages to find any, then after some time, usually between 30 secs and a minute all the networks in my building pop up and it instantly at that point reconnects to my WiFi network.

It is incredibly frustrating I was so used to the Mac being an instant on tool, now it takes longer to get on the internet than booting up my windows PC.

Any ideas what might have caused this?

For me, Reforger's method does help by making it so wifi will eventually reconnect on it's own, but it takes a LONG time.  Turning off bluetooth causes it to reconnect to Wifi nearly immediately, Leaving BT on and using Reforger's location hack on can take 15 seconds or more, and if I use the automatic location at work with BT on, it requires manual intervention to reconnect to Wifi.

I will respond on the feedback channel.  Thanks for the link.

to summarize what I have found so far:

Issue is that wifi drops after wake from sleep, and also that it drops randomly while surfing/idle

Issue is happening on OS Mavericks MBA and MBP (may also exist on Lion and Mountain Lion)

Issue is happening on on wifi (may also exist on ethernet connections)

Issue may be also related to wifi router, but some users have successful connections to other apple products including ipad, ipod, etc and windows laptops

Issue has been reportedly resolved using Reforgers method https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5537854?start=0&tstart=0

Issue has been reportedly resolved by turning off Bluetooth completely.  Bluetooth icon at top-right > Turn off bluetooth (or by just turning off Bluetooth PAN)

Issue has been reportedly resolved by turning off iCloud services

Please give apple feedback!  Use this:

    Subject:

Wifi drops and does not connect at wakeup after OS update to mavericks

    Comments:

Using the mavericks operating system, when I put my mac to sleep it does not recognize wifi upon wakeup.  Safari says "No internet connection".  I have to manually re-select the wifi connection.  In addition, sometimes wifi will drop randomly while surfing and i get the message "No internet connection".  This is very frustrating especially since the main use of my laptop is web search.  Please fix!

100K people have read this and other threads, if all of them leave a quick feedback maybe apple will fix/respond.  Even if a temporary fix works it is not a full solution and apple should push an update

I have the same problem -- MBP drops wifi when sleeping.   Turning off bluetooth solves problem.

Moving the Wi-Fi to the first place in the Service Order fixed the problem on my MBP 13" (Late 2013).

    See the screenshot below;

By default Bluetooth was taking the first place on the Service Order and I think this was cousing the problem.

I hope this fix will work on your device too.

Hopefully this works for some people, however early on I removed everything but Wi-Fi from that list and it did nothing useful to resolve the issue.

I have tried the suggestion of adcemtash to move the service order of bluetooth below wifi but it did not work.

So far the only thing that has worked for me was turning bluetooth off -> mac wakes from sleep with wifi connection instantly.

It seems everyone can at least get around the issue by turning off Bluetooth.  Has anyone not been able to resolve it by turning off bluetooth?

Obviously Apple still needs to fix this -> we deserve to use wifi and bluetooth at the same time

    Please complain:

Hi guys, since NONE of the solutions in this thread worked for me, I tried digging in the Settings, and I *may* have found a fix: it's been working fine for a day on my machine: bluetooth ON (with several devices paired) and WiFi connecting instantly after sleep.

    Here's what I did...

Settings > Bluetooth > Advanced > Third option was enabled, I DISABLED this option. (Not sure how it is called in English systems, I think something like 'Allow bluetooth devices to wake this computer'. Again: this was enabled, I simply disabled this option.

Since then, all SEEM to work perfectly... I'll report back as soon as WiFi once again stops working

Just posting an update on my experience of this problem - hope it helps other people. (About time Apple fixed it !)

Macbook pro retina, purchased spring 2014. OS 10.9.2

Fault - wifi working fine until sleep, on rewake failed to reconnect, manual select of wifi network needed.

Solution 1: Turn bluetooth OFF. Wifi works fine, reconnects fine. New issue: no bluetooth (obviously)

Solution 2: (From jsalord on p.8 of this thread)

    1. Open Finder -> Go (menu) -> Computer -> Macintosh HD -> Library -> Preferences

    2. Delete file: com.apple.Bluetooth.plist

    3. Reboot computer

For me, solution 2 works fine. Wifi works. Wifi reconnects. Bluetooth works.

This is still working one week on. I have my Apple bluetooth mouse connected and functioning but have NOT re-paired my bluetooth speakers which are located at my workplace.

From the behaviour of my system - yours may be something different -  I am thinking this is something about attempting to reconnect to a paired bluetooth audio-device which is not physically present.

I also did this about a week ago, with the plan to try not reconnecting my jambox. One week on, with only the mouse and keyboard paired, the issue has substantially disappeared for me. It does seem quite possible that this is related to audio bluetooth somehow.

Anybody else want to sound off on this?

Same goes for me. The problem began once I paired my Bluetooth Jaybird Bluebuds X wireless headphones.

The problem was solved when I deleted the com.apple.Bluetooth.plist preferences file. I have not re-paired the headphones as I do not need them connected to my MBA anymore.

    Hope that helps!
