Q: Wifi disconnects after sleep and takes long time to reconnect with Mavericks

Since upgrading to Mavericks whenever my MacBook Air goes to sleep (if I leave it idle) the wifi disconnects and it can take up to a minute to reconnect when it wakes.

Basically what happens is, as soon as it wakes I have no internet connection, the WiFi indicator is pulsing, meaning it is searching for networks, but it takes ages to find any, then after some time, usually between 30 secs and a minute all the networks in my building pop up and it instantly at that point reconnects to my WiFi network.

It is incredibly frustrating I was so used to the Mac being an instant on tool, now it takes longer to get on the internet than booting up my windows PC.

Any ideas what might have caused this?

    Update:

Notice that, after downgrading driver, wifi takes a little bit more time (about 4 secs) to reconnect after sleep. This was faster with the original mavericks dirver (when working well).

Interesting... how did you downgrade the driver?

Bruce, I believe the issues are related.  I have also noticed that in addition to bluetooth causing wifi to fail to connect after sleep, if I install dropbox and powerup my machine wifi will not connect.  Dropbox if you are not familiar is a cloud service that lets you save docs/pictures to a remote location.  I found that my searching the preferences/options of my dropbox application, I could turn off the option "Start dropbox on system startup" which resolved the issue.  What I believe is happening is that wifi is set as a very low priority - basically it is the last service to run after all other servies bluetooth, dropbox, printers, etc.  My guess is that your mac is trying to reconnect to your printer after each sleep (it temporarily disconnects at each sleep), and that on wakeup the connection causes the wifi to hang/never connect - all the while your printer may connect and work as normal (at least this seems the case with dropbox/bluetooth.  So my suggestion is this - look through your printers options and see if you can disable automatic reconnecting at wakeup or system powerup, if so you may be able to connect to printer quickly and seemlessly each time you actual choose file > print, and you may never notice any difference in usability of your printer.  If this is not an option for your printer, you may have to disable/uninstall it to use wifi without these interruptions.  Either way, complaint to apple via support feedback, its the only way that apple is going to fix this.  And please post your results with your printer because I assume there are alot of devices/services that kill wifi other than bluetooth/dropbox/printer which we have now seen

I created another, more focused thread on this issue, since the page1 info on this thread is confusing.  Let's continue the discussion here:

One problem I see with this thread, (and possibly your new thread, antzcrashing), is that it almost seems a catch-all for anyone having wifi troubles. I'm wondering if that won't just add confusion to getting some of the specific issues actually resolved.

For example, as mentioned in one of my eariler posts, I've seen the BT / WiFi issue for a number of years, across multiple machines and OS versions. It never randomly dropped WiFi or had problems due to Dropbox (Dropbox wasn't even around when this problem first surfaced!). Reselecting the wifi network never solved it. The solution was extrmemly simple:

    1) Turn WiFi 'off' and then back 'on.' (WiFi would quickly connect then, and was rock solid until the next sleep.)

    or

    2) If on a laptop, remember to turn BT off before sleep, then re-enable it after the wake. This avoided any WiFi reconnect issues at wake.

I'm sure there are other BT / WiFi related issues out there with their own symptoms and fixes. I'm just saying we all need to be careful not to lump too many together. The way many are describing the problem now, I'd probably just conclude they have wifi interference or system corruption if I were an Apple tech.

jsalord's solution of downgrading the wifi driver DID NOT work for me.  After following the procedure to downgrade, my wifi still fails to reconnect when waking from sleep with bluetooth turned on.

Thanks Antz! I appreciate the help.

I've had Dropbox and "think" I've gotten rid of it.

I haven't found a printer option regarding connecting automatically.

...I got onto a "support chat" with Brother about the printer. I was told that my computer would NOT try to connect to the printer except when doing a print job. I didn't find out how to uninstall, but it sounds like it wouldn't help. (I'm not sure the agent was correct but what can I do?)

Sorry, forgot to use your new thread.

...You know, I actually had this problem before I got the printer.

For some reason I didn't get an option to edit this time, so I'll "reply"...

I just let the computer sleep while ethernet was disconnected and airport was turned on and connected to my Gateway. Same problem when it woke up. Couldn't find the internet for about 20 seconds.

It feels like the answer must be here somewhere. Sure appreciate any further help.

oops... computer was connecting to a neighbor's network instead of mine. Have to see what happens now...

words cannot describe how angry this problem makes me. how can world's largest tech company not been able to fix their biggest bug for this many months now?!?!

all these forums are overflowing with the same **** problem: WIFI DOESN'T CONNECT AFTER COMING BACK FROM SLEEP ON MAVERICKS.

how many thousands of people have to post the same godddamn problem for how long?

and no, disconnecting Bluetooth doesn't help. I took it the Apple store twice already and they cannot help either.

aaaAAAAaAaaAAaaarrrrghhh, I'm going to go insane from this problem.

I miss Steve.. he wouldn't let something like this go on for this long. Can a half a trillion dollar company pay attention to its own support forums or at least google wifi-not-connecting-after-sleep-mavericks, and realize what incompetent company you have become?!

I give you 30 more days, Apple. afterwards we're going to FTC to try to start the biggest recall you've ever seen.

Well, I'm pretty ****** too about this extremely annoying issue, but surely posting it 4 times in a few minutes won't help much
