Q: Wifi disconnects after sleep and takes long time to reconnect with Mavericks

Since upgrading to Mavericks whenever my MacBook Air goes to sleep (if I leave it idle) the wifi disconnects and it can take up to a minute to reconnect when it wakes.

Basically what happens is, as soon as it wakes I have no internet connection, the WiFi indicator is pulsing, meaning it is searching for networks, but it takes ages to find any, then after some time, usually between 30 secs and a minute all the networks in my building pop up and it instantly at that point reconnects to my WiFi network.

It is incredibly frustrating I was so used to the Mac being an instant on tool, now it takes longer to get on the internet than booting up my windows PC.

Any ideas what might have caused this?

Just wanted to throw my two cents in.  I have a mid 2009 MBP and Netgear WNDR3800 running 1.0.0.38 router firmware and Mavericks. I tried 1.0.0.44 firmware a while ago and seemed to have problems with my wireless cameras disconnecting so I went back to .38, and stayed there for some time with no issues with MBP or cameras.  I recently tried 1.0.0.48 for kicks because it just came out and guess what?  Weird MBP problems, not connecting, slow to connect, not remembering network.  I tried the above fixes to no avail.  Went back to .38 and all is well.

    So... Go figure.
    Good luck, Larry

I've got a mid-2013 MacBook Air that had no Wi-Fi Connectivity problems until recently.  I'm on Mavericks 10.9.2.

My issues now is that whenever I start my MBA it really struggles to connect to Wi-Fi - generally I turn off & turn on Wi-Fi manually & this sorts it.  But I do have Bluetooth turned on by default as I use an external Apple Trackpad.

So following ths thread, I've turned off Bluetooth & restarted.  Miraculously Wi-Fi now connects up instantly.

A pain that Bluetooth has a bug but thahks guys, Wi-Fi connectivity much more important.

@ andybarton1 - When you say 'recently' do you mean with the 10.9.2 update, if you can remember? Or, when you added the BT trackpad? I ask, because in my experience so far, this problem starts with an OSX update, or addition of BT being on (where it was previously not used)... and can likewise go away with an OSX update, or disablling BT (as you've discovered). I haven't known the problem to just show up at some point where one of the two above didn't happen.

@ imacfly23 - I think people are just a bit testy here about Apple 'owning the problem' since a lot of people are having it, and it's been around since the mid-2000s. (And, that your solution wouldn't work for most of us, so you likely had a different issue than the majority here.)

Hi - I'm not exactly sure when the problem started. I think it was after the latest Mavericks release - but can't be definite. Certainly I had Bluetooth 'On' & the Wi-Fi connecting up okay for some time before the Wi-Fi connection problem started.

Andy, I would guess it was at the update then, which is intersting, as for others of us, the problem went away with 10.9.2. But, as I've said in previous posts, that would support what I've seen over the years... and might explain why Apple is having such a tough time fixing it. They likely fix it for one group of people, and cause it in another. They probably need to step back and take a broader look at why this is happening.

I have a MBA 2011 with this issue, running Mavericks 10.9.2

It seems to only be happening at my "home" network specifically, and not when I was living overseas recently, or using a variety of hotspots while travelling.

It is so frustrating, and I don't really want to do a complete reinstall.  I am disappointed there is no practical solution to this issue.  I have tried a few things suggested such as minus (deleting) the wifi network protocol and reinitialising it, and also deleting the entire list of saved networks, deleting some .plist file or something like that which I tried last week.

    Any other suggestions?

Same as everyone after updating to Maverick. Late 2011 MBP. Never updated the system before (don't mess with what is working well right?). After updating, it can take up to 15 mins till I can touch the computer, since most of what I'm using depends on internet.

Frustrating as **** that there is no solution. Tried the BT, the deleting wifis, re-ordering services and others, but nothing worked. Great from Apple. One thing, if I go for a factory restore and update from there to Maverick, will I get the same?

Air Port Time Capsule solves it for me.

Yep, you'll most likely have the same problem. I tried this, and it didn't help.

Yes, this has been mentioned, but I don't think it's a valid solution - I am not going to buy a new/different router because Apple has a bug in Mavericks

Hi mikkelnl, thanks for the answer.

So, the real fix is to factory restore and don't update, correct? (what a fix!)

Well, that should work yes... But I'd rather not go back to Mac OS pre-Mavericks

I'm still hoping for Apple to fix this, but I'm affraid this won't happen soon

I'm not sure using an Airport will help. I've pretty much narrowed this down to be linked to Bluetooth connectivity.

Whenever I have Bluetooth turned on, it will never connect, however turn Bluetooth off and it will connect within 5 seconds or immediately depending on how long it was in sleep mode.

I have the same problem detailed here and in 20 other threads. Turning off Bluetooth fixes is, but is not a realistic option.

Can anyone here confirm what I see fixes it, which is:

    1. Open the lid (the problem occurs, Wi-Fi doesn't reconnect)
    2. Turn Wi-Fi OFF then ON via the menu bar
    3. Wi-Fi immediately connects just fine

So it seems a simple workaround is an app or script that does as follows:

    1. Detects lid is opened/resumed from sleep
    2. Turns Wi-Fi off then on

    Comments welcomed.

Do u got some external adapters? Try unplug them and try to connect wifi..

I solved totally with my iMac late 2013 i7 this wifi-issue wrapping with aluminium foil external adapters (thunderbolt-miniDVI and USB/eSata), I got old Dlink 2.4ghz band router.
If you havent external adapts couldnt be the case.

(Im using Bt device and wifi all days.)
