Just installed Mavericks, my Canon MP780 will print but not scan. What is the fix for this?

I get a message in the Image Capture window saying: No camera or scanner detected.

Scanner worked with Mountain Lion, but is not working with Mavericks. On Canons website, this is the message on Canon's MP780 for Mavericks OS: "There is no driver for the OS Version you selected. The driver may be included in your OS or you may not need a driver."

I know the hardware (Canon MP780) works as I tried VueScan, and the hardware scanned with this program - but I would have to pay $40.00 for VueScan. Hoping there is a driver that would allow me to use my current software, without purchasing VueScan. I know Mavericks was free, but how many other programs will also need a fix after Mavericks?

I also tried repair permissions with disc utilities, and restarted, but it didn't help.

I would try this:

  1. Delete all Canon scanning software, scanning drivers, or scanning apps from your computer.
  2. Do a factory reset on your Canon. You'll have to look through your manual for the instructions.
  3. if you connected your Canon via wifi, enter your wifi password to connect it to your network.
  4. open Image Capture. It should find and connect with your Canon and then connect with Apple to find a driver.

I have much better luck with printing and scanning by avoiding all the apps from the printer manufacturers.

Thank you for attempting to help me. I really apprecitate it! It did not however solve my problem. I haven't used Canon scanning software for a long time. The only difference is installing Mavericks, and I immediately lost my Image Scanner abilities. Apple Care is of no use. They actually referred me to your reply - which, of course, I was already aware of. And failing that I should contact Canon which of course, couldn't help me.

As I can't afford to spend any more time on this issue. If I want to scan with Mavericks, I am forced to buy VueScan. At least I don't have to purchase a whole new scanner/printer because of Mavericks. Or I can try to revert to Mountain Lion.

I have experienced the same problem with my perfectly functional MP780 now not scanning while under Mavericks 10.9. Here is the unpleasant response from Canon:

"Thank you for contacting Canon product support. We're sorry you have been unable to use your PIXMA MP780 with your new operating system.

Unfortunately, there are not Mac OS X Mavericks drivers for use with the PIXMA MP780, and there are not plans to develop drivers that are compatible. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause."

They did offer to sell me a new MF printer with free shipping. Sheez!

I guess it's either buy VueScan, go back to Mountain Lion or get another printer...and it won't be a Canon. (I know. Other manufacturers do the same thing...it's just the principle of it.)

Nera- I just uninstalled and reinstalled on my Pixma MX 700 using the instructions below from Canon Support. It worked for me so maybe you'd like to try it (adjusting for your model). -Candace

1. Open the hard drive (Macintosh HD).

2. Open the 'Library' folder.

3. Open the 'Printers' folder.

4. Open the 'Canon' folder.

5. Send the 'BJ Printer' folder to the trash.

6. Return to the 'Library' folder.

Where did you find MP Navigator in the first place? It isn't in my Apple applications folder. When I tried to find it online, I came up with MP Navigator Ex 'Ver. 3.0.6 which I installed but doesn't work -- I get a message noting some printers which are supported--MP780 isn't included and doesn't appear to be supported. I am using a Gutenprint driver 5.2.9 which works but not consistently to print. I can't find any other print drivers for my Canon Pixma MP780 which work with Mavericks. I tried VueScan--the trial--which appears to work for scanning but have read poor reviews so I'd love input on that program before buying it & would prefer a workable free scanning driver and program.

I have 2 questions:

(1) Which driver works for Canon Pixma MP780 with Mavericks OS for printing and where do you find the download?

(2) Which driver/software works for scanning for Canon Pixma MP780 with Mavericks OS?

Thank you in advance for your help. I am new to MAC (after having been a PC user for many years) and this issue has frustrated me greatly.

Where have you seen these negative reviews of Vuescan??

I have been using VueScan since 2003 and have found this scanning application head and shoulders above what is supplied and passes for scanning software from the scanner makers.

Vuescan is very comprehensive scanning software and IS designed as professional scanning software.

Michele:

Thank you for your input. Do you the pro version or the regular version of Vuescan? The reviews I saw which were negative were found through general computer searches re vuescan. Given your experience, it sounds like it is worth buying. So my remaining question is which version?

Also, do you have printer driver advice for Mavericks and the Canon Pixma MP780?

Thank you.

I purchased the Pro version because you get free updates/upgrades for life or as long as its originator is still alive and well enough to keep putting out updates for his software.

In addition you get the full, complete version of Vuescan.

I realize the purchase price has gone up since I purchased (I believe, at the time, I only paid $49 U.S.D. for the Pro version.

VueScan IS professional scanning software and is designed as such to be able to get the best results possible out of any scanner it is used with.

This maybe where some of the negative reviews are coming from.

This software is not just simple "click and scan" software.

VueScan does have a basic mode and an advanced mode, if you don't need or want to tweak every parameter available to get a great scan every time, to just get a basic, "good enough" scan.

I spent countless hours trying to find a fix for this. Needless to say, Canon has basically decided to increase their revenue by not offering a driver update for Mavricks. They just want to force people to buy another one. It's happening everywhere with businesses these days. I ended up using my cell phone beleive it or not to scan and was very impressed with the results. If you have a cell you can purchase "TinyScan Pro: PDF Scanner" for $3.49. It zooms in on the image with the camera and takes a high quality snapshot and then converts it to PDF. I was impressed, along with many others, and have used it ever since. There are many PDF scanner apps for free and work just as well too. Although, anything free I am always skeptical. Just a solution I found that I thought I would pass along. Best of luck 🙂

And that will probably not be a Canon, so I can't see how that will increase Canon's revenue.

Just installed Mavericks, my Canon MP780 will print but not scan. What is the fix for this?
