I've bought an Airport Express to give me better coverage across the house. However, it refuses to recognise the router. I've now been advised that I can't use a router with it, only a modem (not a modem router). These seem like hen's teeth. Advice, pls? more

Oct 28, 2013 9:00 AM in response to AlbaHby Tesserax,It looks like your only option is to connect the AirPort Express to the existing modem/router using an Ethernet cable to create a roaming network. This will have the same effect as extending the wireless range of that device.
If running Ethernet is not desireable or practical, you may want to consider using Powerline adapters instead. These adapter take advantage of your home's electrical circuit to create a pseudo Ethernet one between adapters.

Oct 28, 2013 9:16 AM in response to Tesseraxby AlbaH,Thank you for getting back to me, Tesserax. I have already tried the ethernet route but I get the msg 'you're trying to connect to an IP address which isn't recognized'. The guy at the computer store told me that AE is not configured to work with UK ADSL systems. So why are they selling them here? Even cable networks are now doing modem routers so he says there's a conflict issue - 2 firewalls, etc etc. I feel I've been ripped off & I still have the initial issue I was trying to deal with unresolved. People in the UK need to be aware if this - if you follow the reviews you'll buy AE only to find it is money completely down the drain (sad face!)

Probably because the AirPort Express is more than just an Internet router. Graned it does not support the PPPoA protocol used in the UK for ADSL, but it can still be used to extend a wireless network of another AirPort or be used for streaming iTunes or sharing a USB printer.
I'm sorry that this particular store will not refund your purchase. I am assuming that it is not an Apple Store which would have under the circumstances.

Oct 28, 2013 9:53 AM in response to Tesseraxby AlbaH,You're right, it wasn't an Apple store - but don't judge me on that. There is no local store here - nearest is about 11/2- 2 hrs away. Yes, I should have ordered it online & got it delivered - but I'd read it was easy to set up from the reviews & I had time to set it up that day...my only concern is that othersare going to make the same mistake as me. I went to a national retailer, a computer superstore. No-one told me...it is a cautionary tale...
