Stop Safari from doing a web search on web addresses

Hi,

I've been a Google Chrome fan forever. Recent purchases of Apple products have prompted me to try out their equivalent app offerings. In particular, I am keen on shifting to Safari as my default web browser.

One quirk that just gets me mad when using Safari is that it does a Google search (I've set Google as my default search engine in Prefs) on every web address I input. For example, if I type in www.github.com on the address bar, I expect to be taken to the Github website. I do not want Safari to show me a Google search of www.github.com 😠.

Could someone please tell me if there is a workaround to this or is this some Safari "feature" that I will have to live with?

Thanks!

Safari-OTHER, OS X Mavericks (10.9)

Thank you for your response.

I get taken to google.com and www.github.com is searched on Google.

EDIT: Solved!

Thank you Andy for pointing out the Google search option. So I just realized that whenever I type in an address, I am given 2 suggestions:

  1. Google search whatever is typed in the address bar
  2. Check History & Bookmarks for content typed in address bar

By default the Google search option is always highlighted so on hitting Enter I get taken to Google and the content in the address bar is automatically searched there. But if I just hit the UP arrow on the address bar after typing out a web address, I get directly taken to the website and the website address isn't Google searched.

Feel like an idiot! 😝

Which is exactly what happens here - you get taken to google ?

or do you mean that Safari shows changing google search suggestions before you finish typing... ?. If so, see Safari - Preferences - Privacy & check the box at the bottom marked 'Prevent Search engine from providing suggestions'.
