Installed Mavericks, now HDMI Monitor is black. Any ideas?

I have a new MacBook Pro and Samsung 55" display that I've been watching movies on for the last 2 months through HDMI-HDMI. I went on vacation and used another 40 inch display and when I came home my Samsung would no longer work with the HDMI port. The only other update that I ran was a Java update. I have not updated and still am having a similar problem. I reset the Samsung to default settings and no luck. I connected to a 32" display in the bedroom and it works fine. I'm thinking it has something to do with the 40" display that I adjusted the output to 1080i when it was probably only a 720p display and now it's somehow stuck. The display flickers when I plug in the HDMI and the Samsung recognizes that it's connected to a source but says there's no output from the source. I can't figure it out... Spent 4 hours last night trying to figure this out. Does anyone think it would have something to do with the Java update? I reset the PRAM and SMC and it didn't make any difference. I'm thinking there is a stack somewhere that needs to be cleared out that isn't cleared by reseting the PRAM/SMC. This issue seems to random in all the posts to be a result from an update since some are resolved and some aren't.

I am encountering the same situation.. upgraded to OSX mavericks, connected an external monitor using HDMI and it fails to detect the external monitor, and my main MBPro Retina display starts flickering.

before OSX 10.9 all used to work fine

I have a situation like many described.

Retina Macbook Pro; was using Mavericks 10.9.0 or .1 (forget which); plug in the HDMI cable to a large HDTV and the Macbook Pro. The HDTV gets nothing. The Macbook Pro goes black, then shows the screen in a new resolution, with icons and desktop picture adjusting--then within a second, black again, then adjusting again, then black again and adjusting again, so on ad infinitum. Leave it on long enough and the desktop picture either shifts to something I had set for a non-mirrored desktop, or it just goes gray. One time when I unplugged the HDMI cable, the laptop went black and I had to force-restart.

I tried starting with a different resolution, tried turning mirroring off or on before plugging in the cable (after plugging in, nothing is possible as things shift too quickly for the cursor to appear). Tried restarting, tried restarting with the HDMI plugged in. Tried using a different TV set. Tried zapping the PRAM and resetting the SMC. Nada. Called Apple support a few times, their best advice was that the 10.9.3 upgrade was corrupted, and I should back up my data and do an Archive & Install, which will have to wait until I got free time. See if that works.

Same problem here. I upgraded to 10.9.3 and now my external monitor is black. I know it's receiving a signal.

Details:

-I can see the cursor in the external display but cannot move apps/windows into the space

-apps will launch on the external display space but not render. I have to disconnect the HDMI and they move onto the laptop screen

-This happened immediately after I installed the 10.9.3 update.

-I also attempted a re-installation of 10.9.3, to no avail.

For a bit of good news, the WiFi connection "Waking From Sleep" issue seems to be resolved. Once I get a release that address BOTH external display and wifi, I'll never update OSX again(I still run IOS 5.1 pre-apple maps release because "No, thank you").

I'm gonna unsubscribe to this post...for everyone who is wondering, the problem is the adapter from minidisplay to HDMI/DVI. Unfortunately you need to have a couple lying around to try because my apple brand adapter only worked with specific montiors and did not work with others. My off brand adapter works with everything. If your current setup isnt working, just try a different brand adapter.

Not for me. I don't have one of those. Just an HDMI cable.

i have Mac Mini 2011 directly with a HDMI cable to my TV, no adapters between, and last weekend after update to 10.9.3 ... puffff 😟

everytime i have to unconnect and connect again the cable, it is the same which side i do it, and then i get the picture again. that is so unconfurtable because my Mac Mini is hidded inside of the furniture and the TV fixed on the wall 😟

before till 10.9.2 was always working perfectly, i think the 4k updade they did messed up with the standard HDMI output 😟

This issue just occurred on my MBP (Oct 2013) HDMI - HDMI on an external 27" monitor. It was working just fine earlier today. Haven't updated a thing since, but no display this evening. I tried choosing the input selection on the monitor and it appeared to initiate a scan of all video ports. Nada. I then tried the suggestion above (cmd-F2). Again, nada. Then, I tried kicking off the scan of the video ports on the external monitor and when the monitor flashed that it was scanning HDMI I tried the cmd-F2 trick. The external display lit up. So, it looks like some kind of synchronization issue. At least it's working for now....

I'm running 10.9.3 (Late 2013 model mbp) prior to making this change whether I plugged in the hdmi cable to the port or pulled it out the OS would crash. After I made the change I'm able to plug or pull the cable out at will without crashing the OS. I'm plugging into a Samsung TV (directly with [amazon] hdmi cable).

PS - Shouldn't they remove that option if it pretty much crashes the OS without fail for quite a few people?

i am in business trip this week, only friday will be able to do the update, hope that they fix it otherwise i will go back to 10.9.2 or even to 10.8 which worked perfectly

Well, To finish this... I bought another mini-display port / thunderbolt to HDMI. And... WORKED. A generic from dx . com worked fine. But... what was interesting is that "the old one", that used to worked for me, and stopped, worked smoothly in my brother's macbook pro. Really strange. I though that maybe, maybe the problem was that My TV is a "samsung", and we all know the war between apple and samsung, because I plugged the MBP of my brother in a LG TV. I didn`t try to connect my macbook in another TV. But I don`t think it`d work. Why? because When I connected this new one in my macbook air or anyone in the MBP of my brother, just after You plugged it into the computer, the macbook`s screen blinks. And using the one I am describing here, the problematic one, no signal of life when plugged in my MBA. Well, The many advices gave here was helpful, but the most one: by another one... tis

After update to 10.9.4 my second display died. 10.9.3 works just fine for me... I don't get it why apple can't solve this type of problems...

it is a disaster, Apple made the 10.9.3 with major update for 4k monitors/TVs and damage the actual ones 😟

i tried the 10.9.4 update yesterday night, and for several times turn on/off, change cables, change configurations on the system preferences and NOTHING. it dent work at all,

next step, i will try tomorrow format computer go back to Lion and try to install Mavericks 10.9.0, if Apple allowed it) and then the 10.9.2 Combo update. theoretical should give life back to what once worked perfectly. Then just stop updating foolish Apple updates
