Nov 12, 2013 12:01 PM in response to kentendoby granvillewolfe,There is a shortcut key combination to detect displays just press command+F2 (brightness up) works instantly, its a fairly old trick that I discovered
-
Nov 12, 2013 3:44 PM in response to granvillewolfeby Turbo240Z,I tried the key combo and nothing happened for me. I did have different luck when I rebooted the machine. The display is detected and all configuration settings are available, but it doesn't actually drive a signal to the monitor. I tried toggling mirroring. Still just a black screen (doesn't wake up unless I touch one of the menu buttons). I can plug the same thing into a machine I haven't upgraded and it works fine.
I appreciate the tips though.

Nov 13, 2013 6:27 AM in response to kentendoby Grahammat,I too appreciate the tips, but neither of them works for me. I have tried cmd+F2 as well as rebooting the Mac, but I still have no thunderbolt/HDMI display monitoring.
I see there are three new OSX updates (for Digital Camera RAW Compatibility, iBooks and Mail). Nothing about display mirroring, but I will load them and see if it helps.
And when I come here to update my contribution to this discussion why is that after logging in the system doesn't bring me back to ths discussion immediately? Why do I have to go and search for it again? Simple, simple stuff that I would have expected Apple to get right.
-
Nov 13, 2013 12:30 PM in response to kentendoby Grahammat,I can hardly believe this but, having installed the three OSX updates I mentioned above, cmd+F2 does now switch on display mirroring with my TV. I have not had to reboot to mirror the display.
:-)

Nov 13, 2013 2:02 PM in response to Grahammatby SuperKirby,I tried the cmd+F2 trick and it does NOT work for me. Rebooting doesn't fix it either.
The good news is that it finally forced me to buy an Apple TV Box (been waiting forever for it). Now I am happy to say I will never need to hook up my Mac via HDMI cord again! And WOW, Apple TV is amazing.

Nov 18, 2013 9:41 AM in response to kentendoby MrGman62,Similar issue. HP w2338h working fine until Mavericks. HDMI connection via DVI adapter. Now this monitor does not even appear. Mid 2010 17" MBP.
I work as a consultant from home and work with numerous customers and connect to multiple environments concurrently. Not having dual display is brutal and is impacting my productivity and income. Not cool at all.

Nov 18, 2013 10:47 AM in response to kentendoby naresh09,I'm having the same problem...trying to watch from my Samsung TV and my 2012 Macbook Pro 13" goes black and whats worse is I can't even esc to bring it back; it just freezes and I have to do a hard shut down.
I'll have to try the cmd/F2 idea.
What is up with Apple these days???

Nov 18, 2013 1:26 PM in response to kentendoby Grahammat,This all came right for me again when I installed the last updates to Mavericks.
Now it works fine again, exactly as before I updated to Mavericks.
Are there are any outstanding Mavericks updates which you have not yet installed?

Nov 18, 2013 1:35 PM in response to Grahammatby MrGman62,All updates are applied. Interestingly enough everything is fine on my sons 13" MBP Mid-2010, Mavericks with all updates applied. He can use dual display just fine. Same HDMI cable and DVI adapter and monitor.

Nov 18, 2013 1:53 PM in response to MrGman62by Grahammat,I have a MBP of similar vintage to your son's.
Sorry for you.

Nov 18, 2013 2:50 PM in response to kentendoby hp79,I'm also having problems with HDMI. I thought apple products were supposed to "just work".
I just bought the retina mbp13 2013 (came with Maverick) last week. I'm a long time Widnows user by the way so I'm still in the learning curve.
I have a HDMI 2 to 1 selector, one connected to the desktop, and the other for my laptop. Monitor is Samsung SA550 27". Last night I connected the HDMI for the first time, and my HDMI selector automatically switched to laptop input, and was displaying fine through HDMI. After a reboot HDMI stopped working no matter what I did.
I tried resetting the PR RAM using option+command+P+R and then also reset SMC by doing shift+control+option+power, and then it was displaying HDMI again. When I unplug and plug back in, HDMI doesn't work from that moment on.
I hope Apple fixes this soon. I'm realy likeing the battery time of the Haswell and build quality / high resolution screen.

Nov 18, 2013 3:11 PM in response to hp79by hp79,Where's the "edit" button?
Anyways, I got mine back to working after using a regular HDMI cable. I had those thin Redmere technology HDMI cables which was the problem. I guess rmbp13's hdmi outputs weak signals.

Nov 20, 2013 6:35 AM in response to kentendoby MrGman62,I switched monitors last night after experiencing this problem (see earlier post). All was well until my laptop went to sleep. This morning no go. No external display detected.
This is my first real issue with Apple and it's a biggie. I am starting a big project today and without a second monitor I may as well tell the client now that I won't be able to deliver on time.
One of the most annoying aspects of this for me is that as far as I can tell Apple has not said anything about this issue eventhough it's a major one.
-
Nov 20, 2013 7:03 AM in response to kentendoby MrGman62,Console log when I plug in the DVI-HDMI connector. The monitor I am using is a ACER H233H.
Hopefully Apple will actually take a look.

Nov 20, 2013 1:33 PM in response to kentendoby christianfromwil,My LG Flatron W2442PA is connected via HDMI to a MAC MINI 2012 with the newest release of the Maverick OS. If I click the mouse the display wakes up. This works for days, but in average after 7 or 8 days the display stays black and I have to crash the Mac Mini and reboot it again. I did not have a chance to try the CMD F2 option.
But seems, Apple has to fix this issue soon. It would be nice if Apple employee could give a status update in this community.
