Q: Installed Mavericks, now HDMI Monitor is black. Any ideas?

I have a MAC mini from mid 2011.  I just installed Mavericks.  Now my monitor is black.  Using HDMI cable. No adaptors.

Shows up in preferences, but screen is black.

USB monitor is failing completely.

Gone from 3 monitors to one.

DJMunja's solution worked perfectly for me.  Now the monitor is coming in/out of sleep perfectly, etc.  Sweet!  The picture on my display is much better/brighter than it was with my old VGA cable as well.

Didn't work on Samsung LCD TV.  Without the HDMI cable plugged in the TV does not recognize the input source and you cannot switch to that input.

What type of display are you using?

Otherwise guess we just wait for Apple to come up with a fix.....and wait....and wait...and.....

Sorry to hear that it didn't work on your Samsung.  I know this is a picky/tricky setup for sure.  I'm actually using a monitor, an HP Pavilion 27xi that has VGA, DVI, and HDMI connections.

I was using VGA as a quick interim solution, since I had that miniDP to VGA adapter for my 15" 2011 MPB.  Last night I switched it to HDMI using a Bestbuy purchase Rocketfish miniDP to HDMI adapter, and cheapy Dynex 4' HDMI cable (since I didn't have a spare).  Even with the cheapy adapter/cable, it's a much better picture.

Perhaps you could try hooking your Samsung up to another HDMI device, then, unplugging, follow the steps from there?

Hopefully, Apple will make this a smoother process in the near future.  I'm still highly irritated with Mavericks in regard to lack of Sync Services (has really messed with my contacts from Outlook for Mac2011 and notes).  Notes, nor contact pics sync, so now I'm using exchange sync, which doesn't sync my contact pictures from Outlook to iPad or iPhone, but does from iPad/Phone back to Outlook.  ODD.

So I just installed the latest mavericks update...and as I might have expected...no luck.  Just to clarify, I think this is a mac to vizio TV problem, as I have a buddy who has a vizio TV and is having the same issue.  I tested my HDMI to DVI cord / DVI to minidisplay adapter on the downstairs TV (it's a sony) and no problem, perfect image.  Can I call someone at apple to complain?  I've been without my computer-TV hookup for probably about a month now.  Bumming me out...

The more of us that take up their time complaining the better.,  Try calling, the online text system and email.  Let them know there is still a real problem

It's not a vizio problem.  I am trying to use an Acer monitor, with an adapter on the monitor end and HDMI to my macbook Retina (early 2013).  The display settings detect the monitor and vice-versa (I can see it in arrangements and I can even drag things off screen into the monitor) but the monitor is black.  This is really upsetting and Apple needs to get on this immediately.  Seriously considering making my next computer something else.

I was at about the same point, feeling like I had purchased a Windows laptop instead of a 2013 Macbook Pro. I have the latest upgrade to Mavericks (10.9.1). I was seeing the same sort of display issues resulting in "no input". Finally had a senior Apple Tech Support adviser book an appointment at our local Apple store (where I bought the "Apple" (Belkin) thunderbolt to hdmi cable. The tech pullued a cheap monitor (Coby brand) out from under the desk and same thing...no input. Turns out it was a faulty cable replaced no charge. Back in business, happily streaming away.

I have been trying to resolve this issue since upgrading to 10.9 (and subsequetly 10.9.1) on both of our mid-2012 MBA's.

Before the update we had been using a Monoprice Display->HDMI adapter and then an HDMI cord to our Sony LCD for playing BR movies and streaming.  After updating to Mavericks my TV would not recognize any input from either MBA like many here.  I tried multiple HMDI ports thinking it was my TV, I tried two different HDMI cables, and finally thought perhaps it was my Monoprice Adapter since Apple didn't seem to be in a hurry as far as acknowledging or resolving the issue on the software side.

I purchased the Belkin 16FT Mini DisplayPort to HDMI Cable from Amazon and just tested it out.  Would you believe the problem is resolved?  I don't know if there were some HDMI protocol changes or what exactly the issue was (internally frayed wire in the Monoprice Adapter?  We've had it for a year) but regardless we're up and running on both computers now.

With all the other Thunderbolt issues post Mavericks there's definitely something going on but for now our solution was to buy a new cable.

Thanks for all your suggestions and help along the way!.

Same issue here with Mavericks with my 2013 Macbook Air.

    Not solution yet?

    Unbelievable.

Nothing! A friend of mine, who works at iPlace (an Certified Apple Store here in Brazil) told me that there's a protocol (in Mavericks) which block the outgoing signal for many Full HD TVs. The reason? We must go and buy an Apple TV. If you install a Windows 8 on your mac it works nice and easy. What a shame Apple, a punch in our balls.

Shame on you Apple. I already have an AppleTV, but the screen mirroring or streaming doesnt work good.

I want to watch movies on my TV thought the HDMI output, because the AppleTV it`s not the final solution.

After 3 months of Mavericks, I hope Apple real put some work on this issue.
