Q: How to configure OSX Mavericks 10.9 Mail to Text Wrap / Word Wrap

Fresh install of 10.9 Mavericks.

Having trouble with OSX Mail where text is not text wrapping / word wrapping to the size of the window. This happens in the preview pane, as well as if an email is double clicked and opened in its own window. In order to read the email, you must scroll right to the end of each line. The text as in previous versions of the OS wrap to the size of the window so you do not have to scroll horizontally, only vertically.

I have upgraded a second computer with the same problem.

This seems to be for all accounts (Google Apps) as well as icloud accounts.

I don't use Classic mode, that site (cloudapp) where you posted your picture is very anoying, how many time does it have to ask me to open an account just to see your picture!

    Use imgur next time.

So I tried Classic mode, text still wraps fine.

Sorry, but my experiences just don't match those of the other users in this posting. As this is the only posting I've ever seen on this, and that it started a year ago, I'm not convinced that it is a major issue, or there would certainly be more postings.

It was okay for me in both modes.

Whatever the problem is Apple should be finding these things in testing and should not be releasing versions that are clearly messed up from the previous version.  They completely messed up searchiung in Mail as well.  Why ?  Apple is loosing the plot in so many ways right now.

Mail search and word wrap work fine, you should start looking for whatever is wrong with your installation. There is no general bug.

And the spellchecker works as well!

Well since you are an expert please explain to me what is wrong in My Installation that causes Mail not to wrap.

Also why all the ways I used to be able to search are either no longer available or give different results than they used too.

Don't think I have issues with spell checker because I turned it off.

    Thanks

Still having word-wrap problems with Mail in Yosemite. Seems to be a problem with fixed-width fonts (times roman etc). When I click on REPLY the word-wrapping works (as with Mavericks)

    Grrr

I managed to fix my wrap problems in Mavericks by putting a couple of carriage returns before all signatures that contained graphics.

When I change the window size now the text wraps like it used too.  Maybe that will work in Yosemite as well.

Can you tell me what you mean by "carriage returns"?  I have this problem too and believe it may be related to a graphic in my signauture.

I experience this now in a brand new 27" iMac, right from the get-go, with current OS/ Mail versions and default settings from Apple- i.e. a clean system, not copying any of my own settings apart from the account info needed to connect. It is also an issue in two other 27" iMacs we have here, using multiple versions of Mail- 7.3 and 8.1. The text of some emails on these systems appears to be wrapped to fit the display width, regardless of how wide the actual viewing window is.

The issue only appears with some emails- as far as I can see, those with content pasted in from spreadsheets are failing to display properly, also as some have observed those with boilerplate footers. Most emails, for me, display properly. Unfortunately those that don't are those containing a lot of technical info and this makes them hard to follow.

If I Reply, the text does not wrap to the window. If I Forward, the text does wrap properly. So obviously Mail can handle the correct display of these messages in a resizable window, it just isn't doing it in the preview panel. To me, that indicates a problem in the way Mail is displaying some messages.  If this is a settings issue, it is not obvious what could be changed.

A short search revels that this is an issue for many users. Maybe not if you don't happen to get any of these sort of emails.

A post over at apple.stackexchange.com describes the issue well and perhaps provides some explanation as to why everyone is not experiencing the issue.

    To quote that post:

"Specifically, if a message has an HTML environment (i.e., pre-formatted) with a very long line with no carriage returns, then that line runs way, way off the edge of the window. This longest line effectively defines the length of the text wrap so all other lines also run off the right edge of the window, forcing the user to tediously scroll horizontally far, far to the right to read each line. This seems to happen in, e.g., a multi-part mime message; even if it has a plain-text alternative, Mail is using that HTML formatting of that formatted text to define the width of the window for wrapping all other text in the message"

Certainly looking at the source of e-mail messages that have this issue they are written as described.

Anyone know if there is a bug open with apple on this?

I may have been a little quick to comment, but looking more closely at the HTML the text responsible for the wide text in my case is within PRE tags.  Changing the default white-space style from the default of 'pre' to 'pre-wrap' addresses the problem (in safari at least).  Now all I need to do is get the author of said e-mails to modify their e-mail!

    Questions then

    • Is it possible to override HTML style in mail.app?
    • Is their a Developer and Inspect feature in mail.app?

This fits with what I observe as well, that the issue is related to the content of the incoming email. The fact that these messages wrap correctly in a Forward window- but not in Reply or the Preview Pane- makes me think this should be classified as a bug.

I created a user name just to post that I have discovered this word wrap problem too, so I believe it is a bug that ought to be addressed.
