Restart and then deactivate all your mail accounts in system preferences. Then stat mail (without any active accounts). Should work.

The activate one account after another. Should work. But only until next start.

There's a terminal advice here in the community, which should solve the problem. The error log didn't help me. Good luck and high five for the next update. Hopefully.

I had a bizarre problem but your solution of deactivating all accounts worked. The Mail viewer window was unresponive (I could click on a mailbox and nothing happened). None of my subfolders were visible. When I went to prefences/accounts, the accounts were covered by bizarre  fragments from other parts of the display. I couldn't see the account names at all.  I have three accounts and by hunting an clicking, I was able to choose them and disable them. I quit mail, and then it worked when I ran it again.

Did this worked for you? I'm afraid to lose all my e-mail that was storaged there.

    Please let me know.

Really wish I'd never upgraded to Mavericks. One of the most bug-filled programs Apple have ever produced. Mail is useless now, going to move over to Entourage instead. Contacts is so slow now it's hardly useable. Had to update various programs (and pay for some) to be able to use them on Mavericks and virtually every program now has bugs in it.

A revert to the previous OS is looking more and more likely

Hi Paul, I hadproblems with Mavericks when I first installed it too (as an upgrade from Mountain Lion).  Once I did a fresh install and restored my docs via Time Machine, Mavericks has been running very smoothly for several months now, can't complain.

Hi. I've already tried reinstalling it. But still find there's more bugs in it than what it's worth. I have to try to work out what the benefits of the update were and so I am unable to find a single benefit. I use FileMaker Pro which is an apple program. Since updating to mavericks I had to purchase the updated version of FileMaker which is the only one that works with mavericks. Having done that I have had problems with fonts not displaying. Contacted the very helpful FileMaker support who were also baffled but it was a known problem. The response that came back from apple - install Microsoft office as the fonts that that instals works with FileMaker. What a crazy response, unfortunately they didn't work even. I have been an apple user for almost 30 years and I can't remember a single OS update that has caused me so many problems as mavericks. No wonder it was free

But still until you try quitting Mail. Mail won't react then. You have to press the on/off-button (great for spotlight, too) and deactivate all accounts, start mail, activate accounts and so on. The latest update on 10.9.2 did not help for me. Hm. For an everyday business user quite a waste of time.

I just open my Macbook Pro and although Mail starts up, there is no viewer window. I cannot create a new viewer window as the everything under the File menu is greyed out. I have heard deleting the accounts and restarting them works HOWEVER I have POP accounts and this solution apparently will cause me to lose all my emails.

Yesterday I was in the process of trying to create IMAP accounts and was moving emails from different folders under the various accounts and today I have no viewer window.

Any ideas how I can get my email back without losing all my emails?

    Thanks
