Exchange 2010 and Mavericks Push Email Support

Hi,

I am new to OS X and Mac, but not Apple. I've searcehd high and low and can't find an answer to this question though I suspect the answer is "no" based on what I've been able to decipher from what I've experienced and read.

Should I expect push email capability with OSX Mavericks and Exchange 2010 using the Apple Mail application, or any other application for that matter? It seems that the best I can do is fetch every one minute, but I am assuming that is not a very efficient method of checking mail, sepeciall on a corporate-sized email account.

I have an iPhone and an iPad and both of those receive push emails without question. I am suspect this is because they use Activesync and the Apple Mail application does not.

Thank you,

Paul McGarr

I was afraid that was the case. What's even more ridiculous is the fact that there clearly is a specific reason for this lack of functionality, yet there us no official word from Apple clearing it up. It's not like it has been overlooked as it's just too popular a scenario (Exchange and OS X) for it to have not come up. Maybe it's impossible or unreasonable? Maybe it's political? Who knows? Maybe it's financial? In any case it would be easier to swallow with a reason.

I just switched to Mac with the intention of using it for business. These are the little things that are going to make it difficult to switch. These are the things that Apple needs to focus on if they have any intention of making it in a business environment.

Having said all of that, I am totally in love with my new MacBook Pro. I wouldn't trade it for the world, I just might have to have a personal computer and a work computer. That's a bummer.

Disclaimer, I am aware of Parallel's Desktop and BootCamp. I realize I can run Windows on my Mac.

I can confirm. I was able to add a corporate Exchange account to the OS X accounts handler before Mavericks and I assumed it was being pushed to mail.app since the account would show mail, contacts, calendar and tasks sync in the accounts handler. However, I always suspected there was problem with real "pushing" of email.

My work Exchange account email would arrive approx 1 - 5 minutes slower to mail.app than any other service. Email, calendar, contacts, tasks push was near instantaneous to Outlook 2011 on the same MacBook Pro, a PC with Outlook 2010, an iPad and an Android phone.

I believe the mobile devices defaulted to the Active Exchange Sync protocol on the server. I know that OS X doesn't support this but iOS does, so we can rule them out of the equation. You can see this when you add an Outlook.com account to an iOS device. It will push mail, contacts, calendars and tasks in real time if you send yourself a test email. OS X will only fetch mail and notes in the settings options.

I'm guessing there was always a problem with OS X using any Microsoft protocol to retrieve mail but it is FAR more obvious now. I bet Apple set standard corporate Exchange accounts to fetch and it never truly pushed anything. Of course the AES protocol has never been supported by OS X otherwise it would use it!

I can't receive Exchange email at all in Mavericks mail.app unless I manually press the check mail button now. Don't forget the server auto discover problems when on the work LAN vs at home.

I use Windows 7, OS X, Android and iOS devices frequently. I've been looking to commit to a single unified OS/application ecosystem. THE FIRST REQUIREMENT IS THAT THE SYSTEM SUPPORTS MY WORK EXCHANGE PUSH SYNC. I have multiple other accounts like outlook.com, yahoo.com, aol, Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, etc. I find OS X is the most intuitive with the account handling baked into the OS. I cannot make the commitment to commit to the Apple ecosystem when the default account handler doesn't support Exchange push.

What did work and now does not is saving a copy of outgoing email into the SENT folder. Currently, outgoing Exchange 2010 email gets delivered but NOTHING shows up in the SENT folder (no matter what is used for an SMTP) :-(

I am, however, not experiencing a problem receiving Exchange email (whether there is a time lag or not I have not tried to determine).

I too am having this problem. I recently purchased a macbook pro for busness use. I have outlook 2011 for mac, but didn't like that it was not fully retina compatible. Long story shot, I initiated a support request with apple care, who only kept playing with settings between automatically check for new mail and every minute. I find it hard to believe swallow that it can work on ios and not on mavericks. Apple care was no help here I had to leave the call, they had me add my gmail account. I susspect to try and convience me that the problem was not with the app but with exchange. I removed and re added my exchange profile hoping that that may do the trick. 1 day later its still syncing messages.

Mac mail on OS X and Apple mail on iOS use different protocols. OS X uses Exchange Web Services and iOS uses Active Exchange Sync.

I'm not sure if Exchange Web Services pushes email correctly to Mac mail. I don't think it ever has. Auto discover has never worked either if you take the computer off the corporate LAN.

There are lots of big problems with the integrated Mac mail and Exchange...otherwise the Outlook 2011 program wouldn't exist.

I found out I do get a slow push when connecting to the Exchange server on the same LAN (using the internal server address.) It takes between 5 & 10 minutes to receive mail.

I have to manually "check mail" and I am forced to disable auto discover and use the webmail server address if I want to connect to the Exchange server from outside the LAN.

My confidence level isn't too high. The slow EWS email push has existed as far back as I can remember.

Hi All,

I too have seen this issue when you are upgrading from any previous version of OSX to Mavericks. I am seeing a lot of this issue with our users.

The work around I found working for my test environment is to perform a clean install of Mavericks and restore just data to the new installed OSX (Mavericks) - it has been working for me for about 2 plus months now.

What works from a clean install of Mavericks:

1. Mac mail client connecting to Exchange 2010 - no issue

2. Outlook for Mac 2011 configured to connect to Exchange 2010 - no issue except one.

*Issue: After you configure the client to connect to Exchange and you want to add POP or IMAP - the account windows seems to have locked and you cannot close except a Force Quit.

Fix: Microsoft a patch to fix that: http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/confirmation.aspx?id=30214 - besure to run all the Microsoft update first before applying this patch. (Don't asks me why? That is how I patch any systems)

I hope this help - Good luck...!

Thomas.
