Mail app: copy and past in draft folder kills the mail app every time

Create an email and save it (instead of sending it), the go to the draft folder, copy that draft (command,c) and try to paste it (command v) to create multiple versions of that email and the mail app dies every time. I do this to create multiple copies for mass emails which brings me to problem 2, the Mail app cannot send to multiple email addresses.

This has been really bothering me. I came up with this solution and have tested it. I hope it works for you too.

  1. Create your first e-mail
  2. Save it to your Drafts folder, in the usual way (in whichever account you're going to send from)
  3. Left-drag this e-mail FROM your drafts folder on to your DESKTOP
  4. Double click the icon it makes
  5. When it opens, from the Mail.app menu bar click Message > Copy to > click on the Drafts folder you want your e-mail to be saved in
  6. The e-mail that you double clicked from the desktop should still be open
  7. Now use this key-combination alt-⌘-T and you'll copy another version of the same draft e-mail to your drafts folder
  8. Repeat the key-combination for as many versions of the e-mail you need - you can work at some speed, it keeps up - no crashes. They will all go to your Drafts folder in the same way the Copy/Paste feature used to work
  9. Once you have as many copies in there as you need, double click each one from your drafts folder, add the recipient address and any customisation and SEND!

This problem appears in quite a few threads on the Apple forum, so I will cross post.

I've not seen this solution anywhere else, or anything similar.

I'm happy for you to share this, once you've tested it, and you can follow on http://twitter.com/philipchapman

GOOD LUCK!

Same issue here.

Nr.1: mail app crash whenever I try to duplicate saved draft

(as a bonus, it doesn't always save the latest draft -> I am writing an e-mail, cancel it, it asks if I want to save it, I say yes and when I check the draft it's saved without my few last changes, sometimes only a word, sometimes a whole paragraph)

Nr.2: I need to send an e-mail to 5 addresses. Before Maverics - I created the mail, then copied the addresses from a document (e.g. excel) and pasted to TO field and sent. After Maverics - I cannot copy the addresses to the TO field, because mail app thinks it is only a one long address "johny@xy.commum@xy.comdad@xy.com" and returns an error message. What has changed? And why?

Brendan's solution works for me and is very very simple. While the draft was on a folder On My Mac (did not have a draft folder, created a new one), I tried to copy and paste - no crash, but no mail appeared. However, the pasted draft DID appear in iCloud drafts! And copying and pasting within the iCloud drafts folder worked perfectly. I have not yet tested if this continues to work after a mail quit, logout, restart, etc, but this is an excellent workaround. Thanks Brendan!

In Yosemite, Apple chose amazing way of fixing this by:

1) cmd-C, cmd-V no longer works in the drafts folder.

It just beeps for error and do nothing.

2) Duplicate drafts (identical) shows up as a single copy in the draft folder

I have multiple copies of mails in the drafts folder, created with the Mail in Lion, but if I open them with Mail in Yosemite, they shows up as a single copy. If I open the folder in iCloud.com, they do show up as multiple copies.
