Changing thumbnails to full screen viewing

Hello

When I double click on a jpeg thumbnail image in iPhoto to view full screen, the full screen version will not appear.

It starts to appear but then what ends up showing is a exclamation mark with a grey background.

This happens with all of the older jpegs in the library.

I did the command/option thing when opening iPhoto to rebuild the photo library and, that didn't make any difference.

It's probably been a couple of month's since I last used iPhoto on this MacBook and, didn't have this problem.

So, I downloaded some newer jpegs and when I double click those thumbnails, they open in full screen viewing mode with no problems.

Any ideas why the older jpegs will not open to view full screen?

The exclamation mark is an indication that iPhoto has broken the file path/link to the orignal files. Apply the two fixes below in order as needed:

Fix #1

Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.

Fix #2

Using iPhoto Library Manager to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library

  • DownloadIPhoto Library Manager 4 for OS XC 10.6.8 and iPhoto 8.1.2 and later or iPhoto Library Manager 3 (for OS X 10.5.8 and iPhoto 7.1.5 and earlier) and launch.
  • Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
  • Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu (iPLM 3) or Library ➙ Rebuild Library menu (iPLM 4) option.
  • In the next window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
  • Click on the Create button.

  • Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

    Thanks for the reply.

Fix # 1 on it's own, did not fix the problem and, i'm not going to download the iPhoto Library Manager in fix# 2.

I don't want to download it because the computer the pictures are on, doesn't belong to me.

I think at somepoint, i will try to export the older jpegs to a memory stick and then reinstall them to iPhoto and see if that works.

What is odd is, if i click on the view tab at the top of the screen in iPhoto, all the jpegs in portrait orientation can be viewed full screen while the jpegs in landscape orientation can't.
