My disc won't boot - Prohibited sign

Hello,

I just received my new Macbook Pro Retina 13" and started to transfer all my files from my previous Macbook Air.

Then after all files have been transfered, I decided to reinstall all and do a clean install instead of transfering all my files.

I had a Maverick install version that I installed on a USB drive, but when I want to start the computer with this USB drive (holding the Option key at the startup) I get the Prohibited sign preventing me from booting from this drive.

I tried with a full backup of my Macbook Air (USB 3.0 bootable drive, Mac OS X 10.9 Maverick done with Carbon Copy Cloner, tested and working fine with my Macbook Air) and also get the Prohibited sign....

So what can I do know to do a clean install of Maverick or just simply boot the Macbook Pro???

Any help appreciated.

Thanks much in advance

Eric

  1. If you just put the installer on the USB flash drive, it won't boot. I made one with DiskMaker X (formerly Lion DiskMaker)
  2. The failure of your carbon copy cloner clone is more puzzling.
  3. I would download the Mavericks installer again and make an installer flash drive with DiskMaker X, and use that to wipe the MBPR drive and do the clean install.
  4. Another option, if the MBPR won't boot, would be to try to Boot into your recovery partition (hold down ⌘R at restart until you see the Apple symbol), go to Disk Utility, and repair your hard drive. While you're there, repair permissions too. OSX Tips Using the Recovery HD
  5. there are some other options too, but those are what I'd try first.

Hello Arthur,

Thank you for your suggestions.

I re-created a USB flash drive with Maverick that boots perfectly with my Macbook Air.

When I try to use it with my new Macbook Pro however, I get the prohibited sign.

When I start the Macbook Pro while holding th Option/Alt key, I can see my harddrive, the recovery disk and my USB flash drive. Whatever my choice is, I get the prohibited sign. I can't even get in the Recovery drive to go to Disk Utility or else.

Thank you

  1. definitely a puzzle.
  2. you might still try DiskMaker X, maybe it will work where the other one didn't.
  3. Try to boot into single user mode and repair your hard drive: Repair Your Hard Disk in Single User Mode | Everything Macintosh
  4. You could download Recovery Disk Assistant, which you can use to repair your hard drive or reinstall OSX: OS X: About Recovery Disk Assistant
  5. You could try mounting the MBPR HD in target disk mode on your other mac, and then repairing the HD. How to use and troubleshoot FireWire target disk mode
  6. If the MBPR has an internet connection, it should be able to use internet recovery OS X: About OS X Recovery

Thanks again Arthur,

I will give DiskMaker a try.

I booted in Singler User mode and got the following message when the black screen arrived: "This version of Mac OS X is not supported on this platform". This is the latest version downloaded from Mac App Store, so I am confused here.

I mounted the Macbook Pro on target disk mode, connected it to my (working) Macbook Air via an apple thunderbolt cable. I erased the disk on Macbook Pro and reinstalled Maverick on it via Macbook Air.... still the prohibited sign when I try to start the computer.

Finally I called AppleCare and got an appointment to an AppleStore to check if my 1TB SSD drive is working properly.

Thank you for your help

Thanks Marweb,

What you are saying makes a lot of senses.

My problem is that I don't have the Maverick version that was pre-installed on the Macbook Pro anymore.

I installed the Maverick version that I got from my App Store account via my iMac or Mac Mini.

Where can I find the proper/latest hardware string for Macbook Pro Retina??

Thank you

I went to the System/Library/Coreservices folder on my Macbook Pro.

I removed the PlatformSupport.plist file that was indeed from 8/24/13.

I restarted the Macbook and it worked! I was able to boot!!!

I went to see in the System/Library/Coreservices and no new PlatformSupport.plist file was created.

Thanks a lot. Much appreciated~!

I'm having a similar problem...

Model Name: MacBook Pro

Model Identifier: MacBookPro6,2

Processor Name: Intel Core i5

Processor Speed: 2.53 GHz

Number Of Processors: 1

Total Number Of Cores: 2

L2 Cache (per core): 256 KB

L3 Cache: 3 MB

Memory: 8 GB

Processor Interconnect Speed: 4.8 GT/s

Boot ROM Version: MBP61.0057.B0C

SMC Version (system): 1.58f17

OS X 10.6.8

I am trying to install Win 7 on my MBP w/ Parallels. I copied a Windows 7 iso from Microsoft's site to install via USB/CD. The first time I held down the Option key after the chime plays, it did not work. I tried again. It worked but only had the option to boot from HD. I burned the ISO to another USB.

Tried again, it worked. I now had 3 options to boot from. Main HD, USB 1 and USB 2. I tried USB 1 and eventually ended up in a DOS-like environment. All black with "No bootup disk was found, insert and press any key" something to that effect. Below that line, the exact same message. The rest of the screen was all black but the same message at the top. I tried to do so but it wouldn't respond at all to key strokes. I restarted, tried again.

From this point on, I could not get back to that screen. The next 10-12 attempts all failed, in a row. It would just start up normally. I then tried a CD with the ISO burned on and holding C to boot from CD drive, 0/3. I find it hard to believe the first 2/3 attempts worked but the following 12-15 all failed IN A ROW. I'm holding down the key as soon as I hear the chime and letting go until I see the desired effects just the same way I did the first 2-3 attempts when it worked. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thank you in advance.

At this point I don't know what else to do

I too am having problems like this. A "client" had installed Windoze via BootCamp, but then used Disk Utility from OSX to create an extra partition of 32GB.

Resulting in that the MBP couldn't do anything but boot in Windows !!

No matter how I attack the HDD I end up with either "folder with questionmark" on boot, and "prohibited" when trying to boot on a USB-OSX-stick.

Can boot on Linux-disk, but not install.

Can re-partition the disk, but to no avail.

Have tried TestDisk from Germany (http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/TestDisk) but no effect.

And from this string: Can not boot on RecoveryDiskAssistant: prohibited

SO - should I purchase DiskWarrior (which I know they have at my local Apple-dealer), or should I return the machine under warranty (it is only 2 weeks old)

i too am having problems, and I've noticed that the maker of DiskMaker has tweeted that DiskMaker won't work on the new MBP retina's. Not sure what the workaround might be. I tried removing PlatformSupport.plist as noted above, but that didn't work... still see the circle-with-line-through-it sign when I try to boot from the USB drive. I have no trouble booting from that drive on an older Macbook Air.
