Since Mavericks upgrade, Time Capsule stuck deleting old backups ... for days

I have a previous generation 2TB Time Capsule shared by three of us, each with separate accounts.

I know there's not much space left on the Time Capsule and that it's therefore expected that Time Machine would make room by deleting old backups. But my account seems stuck forever on these deletions (for over 72 hours now), while the other two accounts on the Time Capsule are working just fine.

I've been through Pondini's recommendations for (a) patience and (b) finally resetting Time Machine, but on it goes.

Here is the last couple of hours of the log (filtered for this problem). The entire log for the last 72 hours is too long to post -- but the pattern is the same, with the constant deletions barely making a dent, and sometimes in fact the space available decreases.

I'd cheerfully give up on the oldest backups, but meanwhile it's been 8 days since TC has been able to complete a backup. (I have been cloning the drive daily with SuperDuper just to make sure I have a fallback until this is figured out.)

Hoping one of you can recommend a course of action.

Thanks in advance for any help...

From Maverick this is effectively a new backup.. are you using wireless?? The network speed over wireless doing small file deletions is extremely slow.. plug in by ethernet and turn off wireless. There is nothing else to do.. you will just have to wait.

If this is the MBA as per your profile, buy a Thunderbolt to ethernet dongle.. it is like $10 more than USB one now so forget USB.. this is radically fast.

I recommend you plug in a USB drive to the TC and backup to that.. or use the USB drive you now have the backup on with superduper .. partition it and TM on another partition.. it is hugely faster.

If you are really stuck on wireless, get the MBA close to the TC and make sure your link speed is 450mbps. You must be on 5ghz.. if not then force 5ghz by giving 5ghz a different name to 2.4ghz. The automagical stuff occasionally needs a swift kick in the pants.

Thanks LaPastenague, for the helpful (and quick) response. Yes, wireless...that's prob the big issue. I do have the Thunderbolt dongle, should have realized that was the way to go. Somehow I didn't think that was the issue when just deleting backups but of course you are right.

It's late here, I'm going to wire the MBA & TC up now and let them spend the night together 🙂.

Hopefully by morning there'll be progress. Will update then. Thanks again.

Alas, it spent the night fruitlessly. I think I need to find a way to kill the existing backup or dismount the disk first. Sorry I'm a bit thick about all this.

Do a full reset of TM.

See A4 in pondini.

Do a verify of the source .. A5 same place.

Make sure your USB backup is ok.. I would do fresh format of the drive.. it has to be Mac OS extended Journaled for TM to work.

If none of that works, I think the upgrade is corrupt.. I would be inclined to do a clean install of the OS.

Or for the time being get another backup software. TM is not the only one and other backup software seem to work without half the headaches of TM.

Oct 30, 2013 12:14 PM in response to LaPastenague

Definitely will do a wipe and reformat/clean install on the MBA. Do you think that's necessary on the TC? I guess the crashing disk utility would indicate so, but there are three of us (with separate accounts) sharing the 2T so it will be a hassle (and their backups work just fine).

I think I know my answer (that to be smart, I should wipe the TC). But I may try first to just reformat the MBA and hope I don't have to do the rest. Assuming the worst case is that doesn't work, I can still wipe the TC.

(If it turns out the TC drive itself is failing I believe it's covered under my Applecare, so not the end of the world. Just a long time backing up everyone again.)

Anyway, thanks for your continued advice on my problem. I appreciate it.

Oct 30, 2013 1:13 PM in response to edbern2

Actually I doubt the problem is the TC if two other computers are using it no problem..The sparsebundle for the air could be corrupt.. in which case you need to delete it.. but otherwise it is not likely an issue.

You can archive again in the newest airport utility. Plug a 2TB USB drive into the TC and start it. That will take many hours.. maybe a day.. and no backups will work.. but if you have to wipe the TC archive and then erase.. but I would do at least a one pass for that scenario to ensure everything is ok.. you can then start all three computers again.. and keep the old backups for a few weeks/months.. on the USB. Don't copy them back. TM is better of starting clean again.

Oct 31, 2013 10:01 PM in response to LaPastenague

Well, the clean install didn't resolve the issue, so I am now backing up the TC to a new 3TB Seagate external.

I guess the only other thing I can do after that, and before wiping the TC, would be to try one last time to delete the last in-progress sparsebundle...? I did try that at one point but it never seemed to delete, even after 8-10 hours. Maybe I should have been more patient? (Had to go to work, and the laptop goes with me.)

Barring that, I guess I'll just wait for the archive to get through its estimated 1 day + 15 hours and then wipe the TC.

Maybe it would be faster to just clone the three machines with SuperDuper, wipe the TC drive and do brand new ethernet -connected TM backups of each machine.

Opinions welcome, but not necessary. You've done enough, and eventually this will work as outlined. It's just all the hours! :/

Thanks again

So...several days later and here's where I am.

1. Clean install of Mavericks

2. Reset Time Capsule by erasing disk from Disk Utility while retaining all three accounts on the TC

3. Flawless new backups done on the other two accounts (never were a problem)

4. Flawless first backup done on my MBA (200+GB, using Ethernet)

All good. But since #4 above, two days ago, my MBA has not successfully completed a single backup. Starts ok but then hangs forever backing up "9.2MB of 1.09GB", even though there is 1.5T remaining on the TC.

Below is the latest round of messages containing "backup" from Console. The last few reflect when I canceled the hung backup.

I'm sure there's something I'm doing wrong, but can't figure out what.
