Q: Mavericks and MacMini - after sleep mode windows resized and glued to left upper corner

Hi!

I have MacMini and HDMI monitor. When I go to bed, I use sleep mode and off monitor using power button (I don't like standby light). When I woke up, I press on my touchpad to wake up my MacMini, after that I stand up and turning on monitor. All works fine, until I installed Mavericks. Now, after turning on, all windows changed size to very small and glued to left upper corner. I can't resize or move window. Only shutdown app can help. But, I can't shutdown Finder, I need reboot MacMini. It's very annoying.

As I understand, this problem appear, when I wake up MacMini before turning monitor on. When I turned on monitor and after that woke up MacMini, windows don't change his sizes.

What can I do to solve this problem?

Mac mini, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.4), OS X Mavericks

I have this too but I was the other way around and this confirms all the conclusions.

I was using DP to DVI adapter and switched to HDMI without adapters, and the issue began to show up immediately. The interface change occured months after upgrade to Mavericks.  I don't want to switch back to adapter because I have cheap HAMA adapter.

I have a good QED hdmi cable.

Half 2011 Mac mini, Mavericks 10.9.1.

Have you reset the SMC yet? For a Mac Mini, it's pretty simple.

    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US

    1. Shut down the computer.
    2. Unplug the computer's power cord.
    3. Wait fifteen seconds.
    4. Attach the computer's power cord.
    5. Wait five seconds, then press the power button to turn on the computer.

this doesn't work.  I use my macmini as a sort of entertainment system, so i unplug and replug my computer in all the time as i transfer it from different displays at my house.

i think it's probably any display that is not an apple.  I use hdmi to hdmi, and decided to try thunderbolt to hdmi as well.  Same freeze and resize problem.  It seems to occur when the display is still on, and the computer sleeps...

As I mentioned above, i've noticed that unplugging the display wire from the computer then plugging it back usually fixes it.  Albeit, a rather crude annoying fix, as it occurs multiiple times a day.

I also noticed, well it might work, but I think if you just turn your monitor off, wait a couple seconds and then turn your monitor back on...it might fix it as well.  I think it has to sort of restart the connection between the computer and the monitor....

Why do you do that? You could purchase an AppleTV. Leave the ATV at one location and the Mac Mini at the other. Then when you want to watch something on the tv that has the ATV, just AirPlay Mirror the Mac Mini to the AppleTV.

This is exactly what I do. When I want to watch something that isn't on Netflix, but is on line. Such as a show on ABC.com.

A month ago an Apple Tech actually emailed me, because I am apart of this thread apparently. And I told him that I would reattach my old HDMI display and play around with cables and what not to reproduce this window resizing problem. Well I could not get the windows to resize improperly. So I figured that with me having done a SMC reset, simply by shut down and unplugging and what not. I figured that my problem was fixed.

My files are a bit large, so it depends what I am displaying on the tv.  If it's a small file, I usually use DLNA, but the larger files (like 4-5 gb), they usually create a bit of a lag.  It's not too much of a hassle just to unplug a mac mini and move it like 20 ft from my computer anyway, it's just a power chord and and hdmi....so...

I have this problem too, but I don't connect my laptop to an external display. When I wake from sleep, several applications become stuck to the upper left hand corner. Some full screen applications turn grey and become unusable until I restart them.

This began after I kept a second desktop window open (by clicking the little plus sign in Mission Control). I've deleted it, and hopefully that is enough of a workaround, but I - naturally - had it open for a reason, so I hope this get fixed.

I had same probl with my MBP mid-2010 +ML

I understood this is an account problem. Then I just preferred to re-create my account, move only the data (Documents, Downloads (...), and from ~/Library I copied Keychain and as far as I remember Safari's data) to the new account. I used mv command from root logged terminal. Then I had to set up the new account manually (anyway, I think the bug is because I didn't make fresh reinstall of Mavericks, and other similar stupid problems may occur because of my ML-created account; I also didn't want to use 3rd party troubleshoot software; finally, it was easier for me). For now I don't see any problems..

I had this problem on a brand new mac mini 2012 model that I did a fresh install of 10.9.  I switched from DVI to displayport (luckily, my monitor has both), and the problem went away.

I'm glad that fixed it for you but clearly it's more complicated that you hoped.

I also did a clean install of Mavericks.  Using the display port rather than HDMI is the only viable workround I have found.

    New & Confused!!

    The New Part...

I have been a Windows (IT) guy all my adult life. I finally made the switch to Mac this past Xmas with the purchase of a shiny new Mac Mini. I have a large Panasonic plasma TV that serves as my monitor as well. My Mini is connected via HDMI to a Harmon Kardon home theater receiver.

I have been experiencing many of the same issues as others here with regard to waking the Mac up and having windows moved to new locations. Some times this does not happen at all. Some time it's just the Mail program, or the browser. On some occasions the window(s) will be moved to the upper left corner, and often they are resized smaller, but not on the left side. In other words, I'm unable to reproduce similar results from a series of similar actions. An IT guys nightmare.

However, one thing has stood out in several of these posts. This problem seems to have shown itself when using an HDMI to HDMI cable and Mavericks. Many of the posters did not have this issue with HDMI under earlier versions of the OS.

    The Confused Part...

So, outside of doing some hardware resets, with limited results for most, the only solution is for me to order yet another cable from Apple and go MiniDisplay to HDMI? That's the fix? I have to admit that this has me scratching my head. One of the motivating factors for moving away from the Windows world was because "Apple Just Works". Well, clearly in this case, it does not. I'm not making an indictment of Apple or the Mac, I have really enjoyed the transition and doubt I could easily be persuaded to move back to the Windows platform, But if you're going to support HDMI, then support it. This has become a relatively standard video interface and to expect owners to wait for the next update for a possible fix is an unreasonable expectation on Apples part. Perhaps this is the way it works here, or more accurately, doesn't work here. Sometimes leaving your faithful minions in the dark does not always warrant the greatest level of confidence. It would go a long way for Apple to simply acknowledge this issue and let us know their plans to correct it. I don't mind waiting as long as I know I'm waiting for something.  After all, I waited all this time for my first Mac!  All in  all, an awesome machine!!

Not just an HDMI problem, more a problem with NOT using MiniDisplay I think!

    Definitely a Mavericks problem though.

My Mac Mini is connected to my monitor (an old Formac model with DVI rather than HDMI) via an adaptor into the Mac's Mini DVI port rather than the Mini DisplayPort and has this problem.

TBH it only happens if I leave Mail open before I switch to the log in window and put the Mac to sleep from there, so isn't a great problem as all I have to do is quit Mail and reopen it.

Rest assured that Apple is looking into this. As a matter of fact Apple has contacted me personally, and probably a few others on this thread a couple months ago. And I'm pretty sure it's a nightmare for them too, as you mentioned the problem is that constantly this or that. But a little of both, now matter what the product is. Whether a computer, car, TV or what not. When you have multiple problems on one issue, then that's a nightmare.

I personally don't have this problem. As I am using the Apple Cinema display, which uses the Display port. Then on top of that, I don't allow my '12 Mac Mini to sleep.
