The best app for combining photos into a landscape

My wife and I like to take pictures of landscapes. However, as far as I can tell, iphoto can't combine the individual photos to create a super-wide landscape scene that we can print out.
So, the first question I have is, am I wrong about iphoto?
Second, what is a good, cheap (free?) application that allows us to align and combine pictures?

Hi Jeff - No you're not wrong in regards to iPhoto.

There are tons of apps out there and quite a few are free. Try this link to CNET.COM, this link should take you directly to Mac OS Image Editing Software.

You need to find one that allows you to start with an 'empty canvas', then you can cut and paste your photos, when you're happy with the end result, just save it. One thing you need to keep in mind is to size everything so it can be printed. 20 x 30" poster size is relatively common now, so most print shops can do this. Online printing services will most likely give you more info as to the size (resolution) your finished product needs to be in order to be printed. And then you can have widescreen banner type prints made... Lots of homework ahead of you 🙂

Hi Jeff

An application that I use is "PhotoStitch" from Canon. You get this software free with any canon camera that you buy and you should be able to find a copy online if you google it. Very easy to use and gives excellent results.

It allows you to stitch landscapes (or anything) vertically as well as horizontally and you can even rearange your pics on the canvas in any order before the app tries to "stitch" them together.
