Updated to Mavericks, aperture 2.1.4 crashing and thumbnails are black

Will this solve the problem or are there problems with my library???

To check, if there is a problem with your library create a new library and test by importing a few images.

To check, if there is a problem with your user settings, open Aperture from a different user account and check there, if Aperture is running well.

But frankly, Aperture 2.1.4 has not been fully supported since MacOS X Lion. There are issues with the Loupe and brushes. So it is unlikely to be working well with Mavericks. If you can, upgrade to Aperture 3. It has many new features that you might enjoy.

Only make sure, to solve any eventual problems with your Aperture library, while you are still running Aperture 2.1.4. Repair the library with the aperture library first aid tools, before upgrading to Aperture 3. The upgrade will convert the library to a new format, and it will be safer, if the library has no issues.

I agree with Léonie, upgrading Aperture is the right way to go.

To make the library backup you can just drag the library to an external disk, that will be fine for this.

However while running a repair with he old version of Aperture is \ recommended before upgrading, in your situation I'm not sure it is the best way to go. As you are having trouble running Aperture 2 on Mavericks I am afraid a repair run from 2 on Mavericks might cause more trouble then it might cure.

The ideal process would be for you to go back the the version of the OS you were running before upgrading to Mavericks, when Aperture 2 was running OK, and do the repair there. Is it possible you have another system still running Aperture 2? Or could you roll back to the OS you were running before the upgrade?

If neither of those two are possible then I'd say after you back up the library I'd just try opening Aperture 3.5 and see what happens. It might upgrade OK in which case you're done.

If it fails in any way post back before doing anything with the backup library.

Frank, I am concerned about this too. I could not say what would be more risky - trying to upgrade a library that badly needs rebuilding, as we have seen that go wrong frequently, or trying a repair while using an operating system that does not support the Aperture version.

That is why I recommended to make a test to check the condition of the library. If Aperture is crashing on all libraries, we would know, that repairing the library is not that urgent.

I guess either way it's a toss up. The best thing would be for the OP to get back to an OS that runs 2 and do the repair there but as that is not likely.

Give the description of how 2 is running on Mavericks, crashing all the time, it's hard to imagine it making it through a repair. As I said it's a toss up, either try the import or do the repair and see what happens.

In either case having backups of the libraries is mandatory. Do not do anything else with Aperture on your system until you have copied the libraries.

So I am going to attempt to upgrade today. First I need to buy another external hard drive to back up my library.

Once you have the the external drive, check the formatting of the drive in Disk Utility. It needs to be formatted MacOS X Extended (Journaled). If it is not formatted correctly, reformat it, see: Format external drives to Mac OS Extended before using with Aperture

Then drag your Aperture library to that drive, and also keep a copy of Aperture 2 on that drive, just in case.

Craete a new Aperture library, when you launch Aperture for testing, to see if Aperture is working well, but do not delete the original library immediately. If Aperture 3 is working well for, you will want to test, if your original library can be repaired and upgraded, and you should not try that on your only backup.

Hey! I'm having the exact same problem. I upgraded to mavericks and now I'm pretty frustrated with aperature, which is annoying because I had no trouble with it before. All the same stuff that happened to you is happening to me.

When you upgraded did you have to pay for it? And did you download it from the mac site? I read that mavericks was going to come with free upgrades for stuff like this, or does it not count for aperature 2.1.4?

Just curious about a few of the details as to how you went forwards. I do ahve a time machine backup that I made before upgrading my OS.

Aperture 3.5 is only free, if you own an earlier version of Aperture 3.

Too bad, that's what I thought. Seems like ******** to me- free upgrade that makes you buy new programs! I already have photoshop 6 for real editing, aperature is just for basic storage and touch ups.

Think that downloading the new aperture is going to upgrade smoothly? I was wondering about that.

Read through this thread... I'm having the same issues with my aperture 2.1.4... If installing aperture 3.0 will fix this problem I will proceed with that .... but will I loose my current library that is listed under the Projects pane? I have some of my photos backed up but not all. Would like to be able to just download the newest version and have all my photos as they are in 2.1.4.... too much to ask?
