Login items not saved

I haven't read about this one yet so I thought I should at least mention it. Since my upgrade to 10.9 the login items for my (admin) user account are not being saved. After a reboot the list is empty again. I have re-entered them several times but that just seems a bit pointless now 🙂 Also repaired permissions on the OS X drive, just for good measure but to no avail. Login items are Mail, Messages and just one third party app: Google Chrome.

So.... Bug or something else I should try?

Thank you for this! It put me on the trail of what I hope will prove a permanent solution that had the added benefit of even being slightly simpler: when I went to follow universalerror's instructions I noticed that plist file was of Type: TextWrangler Document and it occurred to me to wonder if that might have anything to do with it. Just in case, I changed the "Open with..." menu to TextEdit.app. I confirmed that I wanted to make the change and even clicked "Change all..." and had the system switch all TextWrangler documents to TextEdit...but I noticed that despite all this, the "Type:" for this particular plist file was still showing "TextWrangler Document."

So between universalerror's suggestion that the OP's problem was with this file and the odd behavior I seemed to be seeing from it on my own machine, I decided to just delete it altogether and let the system recreate it when I set up my login items anew. I did that, and have now restarted my machine two or three times since, and so far all my login items remain just as I set them up.

tl;dr: try deleting com.apple.loginitems.plist, setting up your login items again from scratch, and seeing if that doesn't fix the problem.

Good luck!

So, thet's it? You don't have any interest in finding out why Mavericks is not working on your Mac like it is on millions of others? Or do you simply wish to stay in the old days with your workflow. Seriously, if you have no interest in addessing your issues, then there is not much these forums can do for you (or some others as well)

Good Luck

Nope, I wanna find a fix and get it resolved, my point was simply that Apple of late is dropping the ball and rushing stuff out.

I'm sorry im not a fanboi, I have been using Apple products for over 10 years, but that doesnt mean i need to worship the brand and defend anything crappy.

I want my stuff to work like everyone else, im just saying it seems more and more problems are creeping in of late.

Good to see you wanting to address your problem, not like our thread-crashing friend.

etresoft a long time contributer to Apple Support Communities wrote a very useful app he called etrecheck which helps in diagnosing many problems caused by third party installs etc.. Go to his website, read his information and from there download and run the program according to his instructions

http://www.etresoft.com/etrecheck

Download, run and post the results back here.

If you wish, even before this, try booting up in

Safe Mode

and see if the problem persists.

The only thing I have found to work isthe following:

setup your login items as you want.

Locate the file:

file:///Users/<username>/Library/Preferences/com.apple.loginitems.plist

Check the modified date, it should be at the same time you made login items changes

CMD+i for info

Select the "Locked" checkbox

et voila, see if that cures the problem, its only a workaround so you need to make sure its unlocked to make any further changes, but it could help

This happened to me from an out-the-box mac without any 3rd party software installed which makes me think this is a mavericks issue as opposed to anything else installed after.

Im not trying to be a dick BTW.

That is not out of the box. That has been severly modified. LittleSnitch, MemoryFreer, Alfred, GoogleDrive, VyprVPN etc. could all be seen as suspect.
