Q: New iMac 27" (Late 2013) - Kernel Panic every day

Hi,

I used Apple product since very long time and I never experience any issues with them. I just have replaced my iMac 27" (Early 2010) by the new one iMac 27" (Late 2013) and since that, I got every day a kernel panic on it.

I did this already :

1) Diagnotic Analysis a couple of time = No error found.

2) Memory Analisys with a third party software = No error found.

3) Reset a couple of time the NVRAM with Cmd + Opt + P + R = Nothing has changed after that.

4) Unplug every USB devices on my iMac for 3 days to see if any of them is related = Nothing has changed either.

5) Install Maverick after that = Nothing has changed either.

6) Open a service request with Apple Support, they asked to do a reinstallation of my iMac, I did it twice = Nothing has changed.

7) Remove my 32G of RAM and replaced it in a different order to see if it could be that = Nothing has changed.

I'm out of ideas here and Apple don't seem to want to help further to analyse my Kernel Panic logs.

I will post 3 of them, if anyone with that kind of experience can look at it and be able to give me at least a direction to take with my new iMac to resolv this big annoying issue for me, it will be VERY appreciated.

    Hi hondrelis,

Please, how do you know that the original memory, that came with your iMac, is 1.5V?

Mine is, no doubt, 1.35V, because is described as PC3L, L for low voltage:memory.jpg

    Thank you very much,

    Regards,

    jjgonche.

    Hi all,

    More info from TechTool Pro:

    SPD.jpg

On the left side you can see Kingston memory KVR16LS11/8 and on the right side the original memory from Apple, there is a picture in the previous post. Both are the same (except SPD Revision, some DDR3 guru is needed for further explanation), even memory chips are made by Elpida in both SO-DIMMs, Kingston and Apple.

When the iMac is configured with only two modules, 16GB in total, runs smoothly for hours with no kernel panics. I ran Bioshock Infinite, Metro Last Light, Rember, Parallels Desktop with a Windows 7 Ultimate 64bits VM and an OpenSUSE 13.1 64 bit VM (both VMs were running at the same time). But when 4 modules, 32GB, are installed kernel panics returns after 2 hours or so.

We need Apple support for this error. If Apple can release a new software/firmware update to solve the problem will be the best solution but, at least, we need some kind of explanation about the type of memory which is needed to work with 32 GB flawlessly.

    Thank you very much.

    Regards,

    jjgonche.

Message was edited by jjgonche to remark SPD Revision differences.

    I am running 4x8GB of the following in a 2013 iMac I7:

    Viper Series, DDR3 16GB (2 x 8GB) 1600MHz SODIMM Kit (PV316G160LC9SK)

Very solid.  I would consider myself a power user (large photo, video editing, gaming, development software, virtual machines).  I was up for over 30 days before a power outage and that was 15 days ago.  No reboots, no panics since I've installed.

    Guys,

This issue as been solved. If you read the thread from the beginning the issue were with Kingston Memory Kit with 1.5v.

Since I used 32g from Kingston with 1.35v (look in the thread for the exact model) i didnt have a single kernel panic.

Here its an issue with the model of memory you use.

As I said, for me, the panics disappeared with other modules from Crucial: CT4951620 (32GB)

A hole month now with no panics.

This is what the iMac came with (1.5V):bilde 2.JPG

This is what I installed later (1.35V):

    bilde 1.JPG

I've tried the different RAM in different slots. Also tried stressing the iMac, but I could not provoce it to a kernel error.

I'll swap the position of the Kingston and Crucial RAM for a few days now to see what that does.

    Hi CyberVoyou,

I also use 1.35V Kingston memory modules and I can use two of then (16GB) for days without problems, but when I install four (32GB) kernel panic are very often.

I tested all the modules, in any possible combination, and all of then are fine, so there is something wrong with iMac 27" late 2013.

I hope Apple can fix it in the near future, because I don't want to spend another 350€ (480$) on new Crucial CT4951620 modules, Kingston never more, thanks.

Any way, I'm very glad to see someone of you solve the problem and I'm also happy to know there is memory on the market which can run on the iMac, apart from extremely expensive Apple memory.

Thank you very much for your answer.

    Merry Christmas,

    jjgonche.

    Hi CyberVoyou,

so there is something wrong with iMac 27" late 2013.

I hope Apple can fix it in the near future,

You will need to physically take it in to have it seen to. No OSXupdate or fix will address hardware failure.

    Merry Christmas

    Pete

Same problem also in my case, discussed in more detail here: https://discussions.apple.com/message/24715597?ac_cid=tw123456#24715597

Apple replaced the wrong RAM that came with my iMac with 4x8GB Kingston KTA-MB1600L/8G, but Kernel panics still occur!!!

When I remove a RAM module, thus leaving 24GB (3x8GB), everything works.

I've heard of some guys definitely solving the problem with Crucial modules, only in one case with the kingston's.

I am very disappointed for this problem...It is not acceptable!!!

Hello, I had the same issue from day 1 with the original Apple supplied memory in my brand new 'late 2013' iMac (totally max spec machine with 32GB RAM).

Daily crashes with restart. Error log suggested Kernel panic and with activity monitor open on start up (no programs running), I can see the ram usage going up to 1.5GB straight away.

Not happy. After 2 clean OS installs & numerous phonecalls to tech support, the machine has gone back to Apple who have diagnosed it with 'hardware issues' & going to replace the logic board.

From reading this forum, I suspect they may have shipped it with dodgy RAM?  The ram supplied was 'Elpida' brand... I didn't record the serial number unfortunately.

Crucial was the solution for me, using Crucial CT4951620 for a month and no more kernel panics.

It was necessary to expend extra 310€, but it worth it, no kernel panics, using several virtual machines, RAM of 4 GB each, iTunes, Safary and other tools at the same time without problems.

Kingston modules were cheap, but absolutely useless, don't waste your money with this brand.

I actually just recevied my 32GB of Kingston RAM last week and have experienced 3 KPs and one instance of several applications being unresponsive. 2 of the KPs occurred while the system was idle and not being used; the 3rd occurred while browsing. Original system configuration was 8GB Elpida RAM. Memtest86 multi-CPU test returns no errors on the Kingston RAM. I have had the system for several months and the KPs did not start until installing the Kingston RAM. I will be trying to work out an RMA with Kingston this week.
