Q: New rMBP sleep/wake failure crashes

I'm using the new Retina MacBook Pro running Mavericks, and in the short span I've used it I've encountered a problem multiple times where the machine crashes during sleep. (I also tend to leave my WD external hard drive plugged in, if that makes any difference.)

I have two error logs, but since they are quite lengthy I have made them viewable in this Evernote:

I am having the same issue-I think. Installed Mavericks about a week ago. I just went to open it this AM and it has crashed. Running on MacBook Pro about 2 yrs old haven't had any problems like this before. Is there a trick to getting this to start up?

    Thanks. Drucilla

Same problem here with a brand new Mac Book Pro Retina, 15-inch, Nov. 2013.  Sadened to say that this is the THRID brand new computer I've been given from Apple with the same issues.  Four reinstalls with complete wipes of the operating software and four completely different re-builds.  The latest, pulling the raw data back piece by piece - no time machine, no migration assistant.  Still an issue.  Been on the the phone with Apple Care for the last month.  In short, they have no idea.  Latest system diagnositic sent to the engineers.  Waiting on a call back.  Will keep you all posted.  Good luck!  This one is frustrating!!!

And I'm saddened to see that Apple doesn't have a sophisticated enough process to stop its people from continuing to replace hardware (without success) on an issue with a fairly clearly defined set of circumstances.

well, I'm going to the genius today.  I am not hopeful they can do anything after reading up here, but I figured it wouldnt hurt to go in and talk to someone.  I'm wondering  that if they want to replace my machine, maybe I shouldnt let them.  its brand new after all.  but maybe it would work.. sigh....

I'm on my second machine (Late-2013 MPB 15" Retina) - same problem on both. I'm starting to unplug all external devices at night (up for 48 hrs !) - It's a USB (and possible a UPS) problem.

If you're willing to invest the time, I think it's good to bring it in and give them another report of the issue but I wouldn't let them replace it.  Bookmark this thread and show them how many people are affected and how no one has yet had a replacement machine resolve the problem. (And I'm speaking of the connected USB drive leading to the spontaneous reboot and system report of "sleep wake failure", not the miscellaneous other reports of other issues in this thread where people are dealing with a lockup or black screen or whatever.)

Anyway, given that the problem continues with replacement machines, this issue clearly hasn't been resolved yet.  Whether that'll be a software fix or an eventual hardware fix remains to be seen.

I use a drobo drive which caused the error and then the G-tech 4 bay drive caused it also.......

Computer was a Late 2013 Retina Macbook Pro 2.6ghz

I've said this previosly on the thread, but this failure only happens for USB devices that require an external source of power.

Your WD mybook requires you to plug it into the wall.

My USB Hub also requires me to plug it into the wall.

All of which cause this issue to happen.

Now when I pulg in my mouse that only relies on bus power from the USB, no issues.   If I plug in my external hard drive that only relies on bus power from the USB, no issues.

Also, I think it's worth mentioning that MIDI controllers that require an external power source have not caused this issue for me.  Not sure what the difference is here...

well that was useless.  at my "genius" appointment, they looked through the logs, and came up with two things.  they deleted the active screensaver, "refreshed it really".. and they said that it is probably the external hard drive attempting to sleep like the computer.  I thought part B might be possible.  when I asked what are you supposed to do about the hard drive issue, they said to try one with no power cord??  makes no sense.  but, does follow suit with HFY12's finding.

brought the machine home, and its the same.

oh, to top it off, they did not have a hard drive with a power cord to plug in to recreate the issue.  so all in all, a waste.  their "higher up" guy said he hasnt seen this issue before.

Looks like we may be on our own, but at least I reported it.  unfortunately, I dont think they know that it is a problem yet.

I think the "plug into the wall USB" suggestions are right on. Same issue with a late 2013 MacBook Pro. I've been tracking the various threads on this issue while trying to issolate the cause on my machine.

    • First the Power Nap settings did nothing.
    • I then disconnected my two external USB Hard Drives (one "self powered through the USB connection" and the other a "plug into the wall" My Book) and the problem went completely away (3 days).
    • I recconnected the "self powered" drive that I use for TIme Machine and still no problemo (2 days)
    • I then recconnected the plug into the wall" My Book and the Sleep/Wake crash was immediately back.

So in my case it's being triggered by something on or with this drive:

    My Book 1130:

      Product ID:          0x1130

Vendor ID:          0x1058  (Western Digital Technologies, Inc.)

      Version:          10.12

      Serial Number:          574341575A30353730343430

      Speed:          Up to 5 Gb/sec

      Manufacturer:          Western Digital

      Location ID:          0x15220000 / 23

      Current Available (mA):          900

      Current Required (mA):          2

      Capacity:          3 TB (3,000,558,944,256 bytes)

      Removable Media:          Yes

      Detachable Drive:          Yes

      BSD Name:          disk3

Partition Map Type:          GPT (GUID Partition Table)

      S.M.A.R.T. status:          Not Supported

I'm now going to reformat this drive and see if that resolve the issue but I wonder if it's the way the drive is powered that is the issue? Anyway, I'll post the results in a few days.

The only thing that helped me is rolling back to Mountain Lion.

    MBA 11" 2013 8Gb RAM.
