Q: New rMBP sleep/wake failure crashes

I'm using the new Retina MacBook Pro running Mavericks, and in the short span I've used it I've encountered a problem multiple times where the machine crashes during sleep. (I also tend to leave my WD external hard drive plugged in, if that makes any difference.)

I have two error logs, but since they are quite lengthy I have made them viewable in this Evernote:

I have two self-powered USB drives and have the problem almost every day. I don't think it can be isolated to only wall-powered USB drives. My computer will wake up, but the log in screen will be frozen and I can't type in a password.

That sounds like an entirely different problem then what we are going through.  I have always been able to login after the sleep/wake failure occurs.

I think the theory that the powered USB devices are also trying to go to sleep is causing the failure.  What I've realized is that my midi controllers that plug into the wall are different because they have an on/off switch, so they never attempt to "sleep".

    Hey guys,

just tested the USB story myself. Seemed to be correct, at least in my case. Unplugged my USB over night, and my mac woke up the next morning without any problems.

@digitalmem and all predecessors: thanks for posting the hint with the USB connection!

I'm excited when Apple will make a move on that and I hope they can solve it by a software based update.

    Best,

    Tobias

    Hi, this sounds little comforting...

just received my second macbook pro retina 13inch after full HD crash on the last one 3 weeks ago. Today I got the sleep/wake error WHITHOUT ANY USB devices ever been attached. Sorry to burst your bubble uys, but it does happen also without external disks.

Hope this one will last a little longer than 3 weeks like the previous one or should I already contact Apple for this??

    thanks guys,

    Linda

So I was yesterday at the Genius-Bar.

They told me to reinstall OSX. Sadly I had the same Error this morning again.

They also gave me the option to "investigate and repair" this problem, but I can't give them my MBPr for over a week because I need it. **** :/

I'm having the same problem with my MacBook Air 11 Mid 2013. Reinstalling the OS made no difference.

Just to clarify something.  I have yet to see a Sleep Wake Failure when no USB devices were pyhiscally connected to my 2013 rMBP.  I do however still get crashes when USB drives are simple unmounted but remain plugged in to a USB hub.

Yes, I have unfortunately found the same problem with my late 2013 rMBP. At first I had it plugged into external drives and when it sleeps it would restart and gives me the same message. It drove me crazy, and made me try EVERYTHING to fix the problem. Finally I unplugged my external HD and that simply solved the problem. Id doesn't matter what format the drive is in, just ANY HD plugged in would cause the problem. External USB or Bluetooth mouse or keyboard affects nothing. Plugged into the power does not affect it, or the Wi-Fi. The only thing that seems to be causing the issue is an external HD.

    Hello All,

Would like to add my voice to the chorus.  Keeps happening with drive plugged in.

Somberland, i have been to the genius bar at least 5 times with my wake from sleep problem. seems when i close the lid of my pro, sometimes it does not wake up when i pick up the lid and takes up to 10 minutes before i can log on from sleep. what the bar said (the last time i was there) is that it maybe when my macbook is doing an automatic backup via time machine and opening the lid, the backup does not want to be disturbed and it keeps it in sleep mode. that was the only answer they could come up with. it is an intermittent problem for me so, am watching it.

    Howdy, all.

In the middle of a case discussion with an Apple senior advisor. He has openly admitted that this appears to be an Apple issue related to Mavericks, laptops, and powered USB connected devises. We are currently working I. Intentionally generating crashes in order to provide system information through data capture that can then be sent along to the Apple engineers for analysis. This partixulR advisor as admitted that he personally feels that Apple has not done enough to correc this issue. Part of the problem is that Apple doesn't seem to have enough reported cases from owners to alert the Apple engineers to the issue. I encourage you all to call into Apple care and start your own cases to report your own individual issues. This may expedite a correction on behalf of Apple with this issue. Appears to have originate with the release of Mavericks.  Good luck to all!

UPDATE: Potential short-term solution - MBP 15" Retina (1TB) (my second) - I have multiple (powered) USB drives (via a HUB) - It crashed every night like clockwork- unless I unplugged every HDD and the USB HUB.

2 days ago, I SHARED out those drives to another laptop on my LAN. I just noticed that my MBP has not crashed in two nights. Perhaps, since the drives are shared, Mavericks is bypassing the issue that is causing the crash (because it senses that the Drives are 'in use').

Perhaps others can confirm this scenario.

Might sound like an idiot...but could you provide steps to perform this sharing?

    Thanks!

I also had this problem and looked through this thread for at least a temporary solution. I contacted AppleCare and they said they were aware of the issue, but I at least got a temporary workaround.

I use Jettison ($2 app) to eject my external drives on sleep, and remount them on wake. Unfortunately, Time Machine kept waking my computer and then the restart happened, but not on every wake.

Since contacting Apple last Friday, I haven't had the issue yet. Go to System Preferences > Energy Saver. Make sure Wake for Wi-Fi network access and Enable PowerNap. These two settings wake your computer so if they are off, your computer will stay asleep.

I know some of you still require these settings to be on, and if so, I unfortunately can't help you. Fortunately, I have a solution that works for me. Also, I'm not sure if Jettison (or manually ejecting your drives) is required for this solution to work either.

in System Preferences -> Sharing -> (click ON) FIle Sharing -> [+] (add HDD(s) to) Shared Folders (and grant Read & Write Access to you)

Then, on the other machine, in the FINDER -> SHARED (Click on the shared MACHINE NAME and CONNECT to it (as Admin preferably) - then CLICK on the SHARED HDD NAME (this will update the usage count on that volume)

    np.
