Dec 17, 2013 6:27 PM in response to shabba magicmouseby HFY12,Shabba...thanks for the info...a couple others have said they got new machines but have not confirmed that their new machines are working without this issue.
If you would be so kind as to test your new macbook and then let us all know if you no longer get the sleep/wake failure while detailing which USB devices you have plugged in, it would be very much appreciated.
The more detail you provide the better.
Its better for you to know for sure its working before you send the people of this forum off calling apple and asking for a new computer.

Dec 18, 2013 3:03 AM in response to KumoLumoby Davidmd,I've already had three machines. And all three had the same problem.
It could be a number of defective computers?

Dec 18, 2013 3:07 AM in response to Davidmdby shabba magicmouse,i will check it out in the shop, if i am not happy i will leave it there. Apple needs to sort this out!

Dec 18, 2013 3:14 AM in response to KumoLumoby Davidmd, the restarts approximately every three hours while sleeping and a hard drive connected

Dec 18, 2013 3:32 AM in response to Davidmdby greytux,As you can read in this thread there are users with 2010/2011/2012 macs which were updated to OSX 10.9 and are now expiriencing this issue. This means that it is probably not a hardware issue.

Dec 18, 2013 4:53 AM in response to greytuxby Peter Almere,I think I also have this issue. On Maverick 10.9.1 with MacBook PRO 11,1
On wake from sleep the screen stayed black. But my time machine usb drive stayed active as was the keyboard, The lights were on. I also heard the computer perform an update ( camara raw compatibility update ). Then it restarted at night.

Dec 18, 2013 9:16 AM in response to Peter Almereby CGand,I'd same issue with my new MacPro 15" bought 3 weeks ago: sleep/wake crash with my WestenDigital USB 2TB external hard drive (auto start/stop model, the one without on/of switch) connected.
But I've to say that Mavericks 10.9.1 update solve the problem.

Dec 18, 2013 3:15 PM in response to CGandby louieclone,Hi all, i have a macbook pro 10.9.1 mid 2012 purchased 4/12/13 and have had this problem ever since i upgraded to maverick. I have been monitoring my time machine backup times and have not experienced a sleep/wake problem recently.
Here are my two previous post:
12/8 ==>i have been to the genius bar at least 5 times with my wake from sleep problem. seems when i close the lid of my pro, sometimes it does not wake up when i pick up the lid and takes up to 10 minutes before i can log on from sleep. what the bar said (the last time i was there) is that it maybe when my macbook is doing an automatic backup via time machine and opening the lid, the backup does not want to be disturbed and it keeps it in sleep mode. that was the only answer they could come up with. it is an intermittent problem for me so, am watching it.<==
12/12==>Same issue here. No external HDD connected, but I do have only the power cord connected. Has not happened for the past week or so.....Keeping fingers crossed.<==

Dec 18, 2013 5:46 PM in response to KumoLumoby northernmunky,Hello all, yes again same issue here. Just read all 13 pages of this which was fun!
Just bought a brand new 15" rMBP, 16Gb, 1Tb SSD and have reboots occur randomly overnight. In fact I left my laptop on to go to work today and tried to remotely connect through Teamviwer but could not connect. When I got home the timestamp on the Sleep Wake Failure report was indeed about the time I tried to connect.
I'm interested in the amount of people reporting that they happen to have WD Drives plugged in though USB 3.0, since I too often leave them connected overnight (and did so today) through a hub. 10.9.1 also for me clearly has not resolved the issue.
This new retina is replacing my non-retina 15" mid-2011 MBP which had no issues whatsoever with Mavericks and my WD hard drives connected (although that model doesnt have Power Nap) and that unit ran perfectly fine.
I'm going to leave my laptop on overnight with nothing connected and see if its still running in the morning and throughout the day. I've also disabled Power Nap so will report back tomorrow afternoon. (UK time).

Dec 18, 2013 5:59 PM in response to KumoLumoby hailalistair,Quick update. It seems that I have manged to solve this issue!
My issue: My MacBook retina late 2013 crashes while on sleep frequently if it has a Western Digital My Book (USB 3) connected to it.
Solution: AFTER the 10.9.1 update, I turned off "Power Nap", since then no crashes or restarts in sleep with or without external hard drives connected!
Note that turning off Power Nap before the 10.9.1 update didn't work.
EDIT: sorry I wrote 10.8.1 before, corrected

Dec 18, 2013 9:30 PM in response to hailalistairby ThatDwayne,I sure hope you are right. This is annoying. This happens to me even with no USB drive attached. It tends to happen after my laptop has been closed and in my laptop bag for several hours, so the PowerNap connection rings true.
This started only since the 10.9.1 update but has happened 3 times in the past 2 days. Once, I could only get it to recover by resetting my PRAM. I'm religiously updating my image backup these days - just in case - since I'm on the road.

Dec 19, 2013 4:50 AM in response to ThatDwayneby Peter Almere,In my case it also started after update to 10.9.1
-
Dec 19, 2013 5:54 AM in response to KumoLumoby Nifon,In my case the update to 10.9.1 didn't fix the problem eighter.
I also call the Apple support a couple a days ago and they have no clue about it. The only thing they suggest is to try to turn off "Put hard disk to sleep..." in the energy saver tab, which it's not a solution but a temporary workaround in my opinion, but I haven't tryied yet if it will work.
my system is a MBP 15" late 2013 osx 10.9.1

Dec 19, 2013 6:07 AM in response to KumoLumoby northernmunky,What I'm most intrigues about is the connection with Western Digital hard drives (of which I have several). Which suggests this may be WD's problem and not Apples.
WD did release a firmware some time ago for My Book drives, all mine are flashed to the latest firmware and still seems to have this issue although I'm going to check them all again. The latest firmware for My Books does suggest a connection which was fixed, or this may be a new issue what WD needs to be made aware of if they don't know already.

WD Universal FW Updater 3.2.0.10D:
Fixes:
- Fixed compatibility issues with some USB 3.0 hosts where the drive would occasionally disconnect and reconnect to the host, caused by the USB 3.0 link power management.
- Fixed drive occasionally failing to re-enumerate after a system warm reboot.
--------------------
I'm going to check my drives are all genuinely on the latest firmware, and see how it affects things.
If you are going to flash update your drives at home, BACK THEM UP FIRST
When I last updated my drives (I have 5x MyBooks), one did lose its partition but I did back up the whole drive first so I just transferred it all back afterwards.
Don't say I didn't warn you!
