Q: New rMBP sleep/wake failure crashes

Since this thread is messy and too many people are talking about different issues, I'm starting this new thread. Please come to the new thread only if you have crashes/reboots/restarts while your macbook is in sleep.

(this is usually connected to having a USB external hard drive plugged in the computer while on sleep)

I've prepared a set of questions for you to answer. Answer these questions carefully so I can bring your answers to the attention of Apple and hopefully we can get a fix sooner.

I do not have the answer to he Sleep Wake Failure issue, but I can summarize some of the issues that are not causing the problem

1) It is not confined to the MacBook Pro: my Late 2012 iMac started daily frequent random re-boots with 10.9.0. However, the issue has not affected my 2011 MacBook Air, 2009 iMac, or older Intel Mac minis, all with Mavericks installed.

2) The reboot issue is not resolved by disconnecting peripherals (external drives, printers, USB adapters, etc).

3) The reboot issue is not resolved by reinstalling System Software, resetting the PRAM, or resetting the SMC.

4) The reboot issue is not resolved by disabling any of the Energy Saver preferences, including Power Nap.

Two months worth of trouble shooting combinations has not resolved the problem.

Same problem on an iMac 21.5 late 2012 with Mavericks (10.9.1) : "Sleep awake faillure"

I have a MacBook Pro 15 Retina with 10.9.1 Mavericks. TODAY I had tons of restarts due to Sleep Wake Failure. This is a new machine. I paid 2600 Euros. Cmon Apple get ur ... together.

I put the Mac to sleep with teh lid closed and my Western Digital MyBook Essential 3TB (USB3.0 with latest firmware and external power supply) connected.

Just look at the photo of my log. This is ridicolous! I was sleeping during that process and left my mac running without doing anything.

I will now test it with other harddrives I have. Next one will be the compact 2.5" Lacie 2 TB Harddrive without external power supply.

Ok, enough time has passed.  apple needs to get off its *** with this.  We cant blame the WD drives.  It worked fine before maverick lubed us up.

Sooo, my MBPr gets a logic-board replacement. I should get it monday or tuesday back, hopefully it helps.

can u report back if that helped please? I mean i would not gove too much hope reading it all that people only with mavericks have those issues.

So they replaced my LogicBoard and I had the same error right now after comming home.

With my MacBook Air (Maverics) I can't reproduce this. So I thinks its a Problem with the new? USB-Controlers (My External SteelSeries-Mouse also has some problems).

same goes here, but it only happen when I've my external monitors connected, It will not wake from sleep (forcing me to hard reboot) or spontaneously reboot itself (it will wake up regurarly with no monitors attached).

Preventing it from going to sleep obviously "solve" the problem (playing mp3s...streaming from the web...)

here's my setup:

MacBookPro Retina (OS X 10.9.1 - late 2013)

Wacom Cintiq 13HD (linked directly to MacBookPro trough HDMI and USB) (Wacom Driver 6.3.7-3)

Dell 27"inch (U2713HM) (linked directly to MacBookPro trough DisplayPort)

it happens with or without any usb device(s) attached (hubs..HD's..wacom..usb keys..)

Hope this will be addressed very soon.

I've read though all 15 pages of this thread. Please don't shoot me if you think my response isn't related. I am a Mac IT support technician with 18 years under my belt.

I just set up a new iMac i7 (Late 2013) with 512 GB SSD, 16 GB RAM, 10.9.1. Out of the box I set it up as a fresh Mac - no migration. I fresh-installed the couple of applications that the user required and downloaded all pending Apple software updates. I manually migrated just the things the user needed including the files on her desktop, and various home directories (pictures, movies, music, etc). I didn't touch her home Library folder except for one thing, I brough over her Mail, Mail Downloads folders and com.apple.mail.plist. That's it. I made no changes to the default energy saver settings.

There are no USB drives that are connected to the computer but there is a powered belkin USB hub that has her HP LaserJet printer connected to it.

I configured her computer to back up via Carbon Copy Cloner at 3:00 AM every day over the network to a share point on their server (I do this all the time with many computers across many clients, including my own). I set the CCC schedule to wake/power on the computer when the scheduled time arrives. Last night, she put her iMac to sleep as instructed and when she arrived there this morning, she received the same error you are all talking about -- Sleep/Wake Failure Experienced a Problem

After having read through all that the rest of you have gone through, I'm not entirely convinced that this is related only to MacBooks. I wouldn't be shocked if the new iMacs aren't much different inside anyway.

I have instructed my client to remove the USB hub from her iMac and instead plug her printer directly into the back of her iMac. I won't likely hear back from her until Monday (it's Friday at the time of writing).

I have an original RETINA MacBook Pro running 10.9.1 and I personally have never experienced this issue. I do not plug any devices into my computer at night. I have always had PowerNap enabled. Overnight, my computer performs a clone backup over the network and periodically wakes to do what PowerNap does.

My conclusion from what I'm seeing here is that this is likely a Mavericks problem that may effect only certain (more recent) models or certain setups and that the problem may be related to having non-Apple USB devices connected to the sleeping Mac.

If I discover more, I'll post an update.

MacWorks.  Several people have reported this error on late model iMac's.  (very few in this thread, but I think it's in there somewhere...)

My guess continues to be that it is a problem with mavericks and all PowerNap capable macs or at least all more recent PowerNap capable macs.  I think there may have been a PowerNap hardware change in what PowerNap was actually capable of in 2012 (hence the SMC updates here: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht5394 ) the models that required a SMC update I think aren't subject the error, but again that's largely guess work on my part.

Has no one gotten a confirmation from apple about this?

FWIW, I've been traveling the last couple months so I've only been using a USB powered hard drive (Seagate Freeagent, USB3) and it doesn't cause the problem.  I certianly did have the problem at home though when anything AC powered hard drives (WD MyBook)/monitor(Dell w/ USB hub)/etc... was plugged in during sleep.

I returned to my client's office yesterday and confirmed that she did remove the USB hub I mentioned and put her computer to sleep at the end of the day as usual. Upon returning in the morning she still encountered the sleep/wake crash.

In order not to drag this out, I instructed her to shut her computer down at night and scheduled CCC to run in the morning when she turns it on.
