There are conflicting reports on the internet and Apple's manuals.

Unfortunately the conflicting reports still exist. If you already purchased an 802.11ac AirPort Extreme I would recommend that you proceed cautiously by not solely depending on Time Machine backups to it. If you have not already have it, you may want to consider getting a Time Capsule instead as it supports both an internal or external hard drives for TM backups.

To clarify things just a bit more.....or possibly make them more confusing.....Apple is unclear about this.


The user Setup Guide suggests that a hard drive can be attached to the AirPort Extreme for use with Time Machine......but an Apple support document, which was published after the new AirPort Extreme had already begun to ship.....states that you cannot use a hard drive attached to the USB port on the AirPort Extreme for Time Machine backups.
