Same problem for me.

It seems that quite some people are affected by this bug.

I wonder why petermac87 insisted (in one of the above threads) that the problem is NOT a general bug?

In my case, there are no special characters in the names.

Thanks HBO1470 for the hint.

- There was a folder /Users/USERNAME/Library/Images on my iMac when I discovered the problem.

- This folder was gone, most probably due to the fresh clean install of 10.9.1 that I did yesterday after petermac87 wrote that he is not affected by the "Faces-2-Contacts" bug.

- I just created the "missing" folder, but this did not help. Even after closing/opening Contacts and iPhoto and reboot.

(Thanks to Old Toad for the Mavericks tip to display the /Users/USERNAME/Library folder by "go to your Home folder and use the View ➙ Show View Options"!)

BTW:

Since I did a clean install, I had to newly set my user data. It seems that the same bug also affects

System Preferences ➙ Users & Groups ➙ Set users picture (click to your avatar/icon/picture).

Also there:

- "Loading Faces ...", and then after quite some time:

- "Find and organize photos of people in iPhoto or Aperture using Faces".

With support from the iPLM programmer (check here: http://www.fatcatsoftware.com/iplm/ - thanks!) I think the bug is identified.

- iPhoto 9.5.1 has lost the ability to detect names that start with the last name.

- if you want to work with the transfer of Faces to Contact Cards, you need to edit the names in iPhoto to begin with the first name.

Example:

- you have a Contact Card for Peter Smith

- you set Contacts to display "first name after last name" (listing is Smith Peter, this is my default)

- you name the face of this person in iPhoto using the autocomplete function

- to get the correct card listed, you need to type "Smi.." in iPhoto

- select the offered Card of Peter, and the result is a face named "Smith Peter"

- this face is NOT detected in Contacts!

- to get the face presented in "Faces to Contacts", you need to edit the name in iPhoto to "Peter Smith".

Note:

It seems that iPhoto has two "places" (database fields) for the name of a face:

- the one that is listed with the (key) face in the Faces overview, and

- the one that is shown in the Info panel next to the email address (if added).

To get the "Faces to Contacts" function to work, one needs to have 'first name first' in the name field that is shown in the Faces overview.

Another bad change is that Mavericks does not show the Faces (10.8.x did), but the photos. And this although the tab is named "Faces" (the difference is obvious when one uses the switch in iPhoto to change between the display of Photos and Faces). The mini-thumbnails in the grid that Mavericks-Contacts offers are so small that it is impossible to select a good candidate face for the Card picture (even with a Retina display).

I hope that this bug gets fixed soon, and that the good way in that Mountain Lion did handle the transfer of Faces to Contacts is reconstituted.

Apple doesn’t routinely monitor the discussions.

Send Apple feedback. They won't answer, but at least will know there is a problem. If enough people send feedback, it may get the problem solved sooner.

Or you can use your Apple ID to register with this site and go the Apple BugReporter. Supposedly you will get an answer if you submit feedback.

Feedback via Apple Developer

Thanks Eric for the reminder!

I have written a Feedback report yesterday right after I posted the report in Discussions, and the iPML programmer will submit/file a bug report (I assume via the Apple Developer page).

But it would be very good if all people that are affected would also submit Feedback on this bug, either here:

http://www.apple.com/feedback/macosx.html (for Contacts not displaying Faces but Photos), and here

http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphoto.html (for the name identification bug in iPhoto 9.5).
