In Safari, every time I go to google.com or google.co.uk page, an additional window opens at the top of the page inviting me to download the google search app (which is already installed. How can I stop this very annoying intrusion?

That's not really the crux of the issue - if I am in Safari with multiple pages active, I want to stay there without being bothered by things telling me to go elsewhere.

If you want to stop seeing the ad for the Google search app, then stop visiting pages that serve up that ad to every browser they identify as mobile Safari... Google is probably the top offender, though I'm sure they advertise on other web sites as well.
You can open the google app instead of using Safari.

Hmmm, so if I am in Safari and I want to use Google to do a search, I must not go to the Google search page in Safari because it will serve up the advert for the Google app? Words (polite ones, at least) fail me.
On my iPhone, typing your requirements in the search field at the top of the screen invokes a Google search. Google is selected as the default search engine at Settings > Safari > Search Engine. Why would I need to go to Google.com?
Every question has an answer - neat, plausible and wrong. Your answer is neat, plausible and right - very many thanks. Why I missed this, I don't know but perhaps it is because I was more familiar with Firefox rather than Safari. I think I am getting to like Safari more and more.

OK I have a solution, so far it worked for me. Delete your bookmark of google, open Google make sure it doesn't have the annoying download google search culprit, then bookmark google again. Now when you open google it doesn't ask to download the search app.
Referring you back to what tonefox stated in his reply on June 4, why bookmark Google when it is the default search on the phone? Typing your search parameters into the address bar in Safari will initiate a google search without having to even go to the Google website.
Thank you this actually works!!! The other people have valid arguments about Google search but I have a habit of Google being my homepage on every device.
