Launching a folder from Spotlight opens in VLC

If I search for a folder in Spotlight while the application VLC is installed, it will open inside VLC as if I dragged it onto the VLC application. I don't understand why this is happening and have tried deleting various temporary cache and settings files from within my home ~/Library. I can determine that this is an incident isolated to my specific user account as this does not happen within guest. Any direction or suggestions are greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time.

This also does not appear to be an issue specific to any operating system has it has been on-going since Mountain Lion. My last solution was to uninstall VLC but now I require it and need to fix whatever is causing this issue.
