Focusrite Liquid Saffire 56 problems on brand new iMac

I have a mate who's just shedded out over £2000 on a brand new 27-inch iMac and another £500 on a Focusrite Liquid Saffire 56 audio interface only to find that after about 20 secs the audio completely drops out. He's a music producer so it's really important that the problem is fixed. In terms of the setup, the Liquid Saffire is connected with a Firewire cable which passes through a Thunderbolt to Firewire adapter and plugs into the iMac.

May I reitorate that both the iMac and Liquid Saffire are brand new. I think it's down to a dodgy Thunderbolt to Firewire adapter, however it may be to do with Mavericks or something else.

Any thoughts?

Well I Have a Saphire Pro 24 DSP and a late 2013 IMac with 1TB fusion Drive and have the same problems as all of us are having. I'm so dissapointed this is the first ever Apple computer I've ever owned and it seems like a dud. I get sound for a few seconds, sometimes longer its so frustrating, if I go to disk utilities and verify the disk permissions it keeps playing thru the sound card and cuts out when the proccess is finished. I bought it as my daughter is singing and goes to AIM high school Sydney also bought Logic X as she needs that for school as well, so far nothing but failure.

Just an update here from my earlier post:

"I have a late 2013 iMac with a 1tb FD. I'm using a Saffire Pro 40 and can get audio no problem for as short as a couple seconds to as long 10 minutes before it cuts out. The only way I can get audio again is restarting the interface. I have absolutely no issues using the built in iMac audio speakers."

I returned the computer and got another one of the exact same specs and OS except for NO FUSION DRIVE and now I have NO PROBLEMS with a standard HDD. Everything is working absolutely as it should.

I recently purchased a new 2013 iMac 27" with the 3.5 GHz I7, 3TB Fusion Drive, GForce GTX 780M Graphics and put in 32 GB ram from OWC. I also picked up a Focusrite Scarlett 6i6 USB audio interface. I did a clean install of OSX Mavericks on the new iMac. I installed Logic X, Reason 7, Ableton live 9 light and Finale Cut Pro X.

There are issues with the Scarlett 6i6 and Mavericks, Focusrite has some temporary work around for this while they figure it out. While researching the issues with the Scarlett I ran across several mentions that the Focusrite Saffire Pro 24 was working well with Mavericks.

To cut to the chase, I ordered a Saffire Pro 24 DSP last week and on Monday I ran across this discussion group, was not a happy camper. The new Saffire Pro arrived yesterday and I took it home and hooked it up installed the firmware update and Saffire Mix Control. I turned it on opened iTunes and started Dire Straits and I had audio! However it only lasted about 10 seconds. If you've read this whole discussion this is not a surprise.

Testing part 2: I have a early 2011 MacBook Pro at work and I brought the Saffire Pro with me to work today. I am running Mavericks on my MacBook and the same audio and video programs as well. I hooked up the Saffire Pro to my MacBook Pro, the same way as I did the new iMac, Firewire to thunderbolt adapter and took another run at Dire Straits and again I had audio, and after 10 Seconds I still had audio, after 45 min. I still had audio. I switched to Ableton Live and went through the instrument tabs they all played fine. Opened Logic and no problem.

The internal audio on the new iMac works fine so what ever the issue is there I believe is fixable. I don't think Mavericks is the problem with the Saffire as mentioned above, sounds like maybe Fusion drive is the issue. I'm going to hook up an external bootable hard drive and see if that takes care of the iMac as a temporary fix.

The fact that the internal audio works with the Fusion drive indicates that it's doable. I hope Apple and Focusrite can get it worked out soon......

For some, internal audio presents a problem as well.

It's been traced to the Fusion-Drive software which is included with Mavericks and the last version of Mountain Lion.

We have the same issue. Although not currently running a liquid saffire we have been looking into upgrading our current interfaces due to no new drivers being released for the profire and having audio trouble with our NRV10. We figured its time to upgrade. However this has lead us to do some more digging on what interfaces work/ dont work with the new 2013 imacs.

Unfortunetelly, we've discovered that most people running a new iMac with mavericks or Mountain lion and a fusion drive are facing the same issues. To our shock this must mean its not the audio interfaces, instead its the Mac. Today we contacted apple to see what they had to say on the matter. Apparently they have not heard about this issue! the technician ran a search and nothing came back. We where told to inisiate a SMC and PRAM reset. Although audio is currently fine we do not believe that this reset will cure the problem. I would advise everyone to contact apple with the issue. The more they hear about it the more likely they will realise this is a major fault in their machines rather than hiding behind 'We are the geniuses, the problem doesnt exist'.

You really need to read this thread, Apple does know about the problem, it's with the software that controls the Fusion Drive. At least that's the current story. This is a problem that's been known about for some time.

wrote this already in another post,

didnt read the whole discussion, but i got big problems running my focusrite pro 14 (firewire) with my imac 2013, 27" 16 gig ram and i7 processor. after a couple of seconds the sound went silent. the main problem is the fusiondrive thing. somehow it doesnt work well with ableton and to much sound processing.

Fixed

i solved the problem by installing mac osx only on the ssd and using the hdd as a place for windows and data storage. using google to find out how to install mac osx only on the ssd and turn off fusiondrive function

hope i could help 🙂

Thank you very much for your answer! I'd like Mac to respond for that with a quickly answer... I am pretty new with Mac products but it seems i'ts my last time with their expensive and useless tricks... I have a MacBook Pro and I use Protools 9 with my Saffire 56, but I realize that Maverick it´s not compatible with Protools 9, bla bla bla... I hope they fix their OS soon, if you have some news about it I would apreciate you contact me, I'll do the same, thank you

Federico

P.D.: Meanwhile check the Alex-k solution, seems it works...

My Saphire Pro 24 DSP is running perfectily fine on my late 2013 iMac 27" with 3 TB fusion drive. It is connected using the Apple firewire to thunderbolt adapter. This was not of course the case when I dropped $3,000.00 + on it back in October.

However the next public release of Maverics,10.9.2, is the cure for the fusion drive issue.

The USB 2 audio devices having issues when pluged in tos USB 3 ports is a different beast which not only effects Apple, its a problem with microsoft and Linux PCs as well.

It must be corrected by audio interface manufacture driver update.

Just thought you would like to know the light at the end of the tunnel is not a gorrella with a flash light .....

So is the 10.9.2 update already available?! Last time I turned on my machine, five days ago, it wasn't... so, I put the machine into the box and tried to get the apple support to change my HD... =( you know, it was brand new... then they told me that was impposible because I live in Mexico.... So... is there a god? jajaja... I will look for the new update, thank you very much!!!

There is a fix that works until Apple jumps in an updates the OS.

1. Go to Disk Utility and Partition your drive.

2. Install Mavericks on the Partition.

3. Transfer the information from your existing HD to the new partition.

4. Everything related to audio works again, but now you have no benefit of the solid state drive.

If you do not choose to partition your drive please download the beta of Mavericks (10.9.2)

Hope this information helps, please let us know if you need more assistance.

Best Regards,

Mike Towns
