Q: GPU Panic report interpretation, Mavericks OS

This is from a MacBook Pro mid-2010.  The unit shuts down and restarts after between an hour and 3 hours of operation.  This is the panic report from the last shutdown.  Appreciate any interpretation anyone can offer!  Thanks.

    If it's a 15 inch model it is likely related to http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4088. This model has known issues with those sorts of symptoms you are reporting. Best to get it checked out by a repairer.

    I cannot explain it but I got a *very* similar report on a late 2012 Macbook Pro Retina 15".  This just started happening.  Any time anything tries to access the discrete GPU shortly after the computer becomes very unstable and usually crashes and usually needs a hard reset. 

     

    I'll be curious to hear what you come up with.  I'm also under mavericks 10.9

    Do you have a 15" mid-2010 model? If so...

     

    Mid-2010 15" MacBook Pros - the bad NVIDIA GPU

     

    If you're having frequent kernel panics with your 15" mid-2010, or intermittent screen problems, the problem is, more than likely, the faulty NVIDIA GPU found in a number of those machines.

    Here's the "official" Apple take on the issue - but the very real kernel panics need not be preceded by 'Intermittent black screen or loss of video'... in fact, you might not experience any video problems at all. Although video problems can certainly be a portent of things to come…

     

    So what can you do? Print out a copy of your kernel panic and a copy of the Knowledge Base article and take them, along with your machine, to your local Apple Store or an Apple Authorized Service Provider. The unfortunate thing is that many people have passed the “three years from date of purchase” now and Apple is not honoring the free logic board replacement for many users. Some dealers seem to be making some exceptions for those past the three year mark, but don’t count on it…

    I have this issue, too, and do have a mid-2010 15".

     

    But I never had the problem until I installed Mavericks.

    I'm having the same problem with the same exact model.  Is the only way to fix it by replacing the logic board?  I've made a few customizations to mine and I'm sure they wouldn't replace it for free.

    Yes, that's the only way to fix it since the video circuit is on the motherboard. What kind of customizations did you make? If you changed the hard drive, that's ok. Mine had non-Apple RAM and they still fixed it.

    I had a few panics under Snow Leopard, but nothing like after upgrading to Mavericks. Apparently the new OS uses the graphics hardware in a different way that is likelier to reveal the defect.

    I had this same problem. Mid 2010 Macbook Pro 15", gpu panic. I upgraded from 10.6.8 because I installed an app that requires at least 10.8. My computer became unusable, i.e. I had > 30 restarts (all gpu panics) in the 5 days I had Mavericks on.

     

    I reverted to 10.6.8 and the problem instantly went away, so this is unquestionably a software problem with Mavericks, which is really very annoying. Before that I had tried: phone support (check disk for errors, none found), took it to the local "genius bar" where I had hw diagnostics run (tests all green) and upgraded firmware, I did a clean OS install (completely wiping the HD), uninstalled/reinstalled this and that, and of course reported bunches of failures online, all to no avail.

     

    Come on Apple, I paid > $2300 for this laptop, and you come out with a major release that doesn't even work, apparently wasn't even tested, on your own very recent hw?

    The issue here, Macbook Pro 2010, 15". Since upgrade to Mavericks I have massive increase of GPU panics and resulting reboot.

    Might be related to sleep modes, since it happens mostly, when the machine goes to or comes from sleep.

     

    Apple, since you have all these reports and it's likely to be a SW problem, can't you fix it?

    It's likely that you have the faulty NVIDIA GPU -> see http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4088?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US - and my post above.

     

    The kernel panics are caused by the faulty GPU.

    I met the exactly same problem. I just called the customer service of apple, he told me to reset the PRAM (it's easy to do this, just google "Reset the MAC PRAM") and he told me this usually solve the problem. As I just try this method, if this helps for a whole week, I will give you a further feedback.

    Yes please do let us know the result. None of the Apple support folks I talked to, either genius bar or on the phone, mentioned resetting PRAM.

    I tried the solution PRAM suggestion today beased on tao lyu's post, and had a GPU panic a few hours later.
