Q: GPU Panic report interpretation, Mavericks OS

This is from a MacBook Pro mid-2010.  The unit shuts down and restarts after between an hour and 3 hours of operation.  This is the panic report from the last shutdown.  Appreciate any interpretation anyone can offer!  Thanks.

Thanks all.  The bottom line for me was that it clearly is a failed Nvidia.  I installed the gfxCardStatus app.  If I keep the unit running exclusively on the Intel graphics card it runs forever; allowing it to switch to the nvidia card guarantees a crash within 30 minutes. When this started happening (well before my 3 years was up) I took it to an Apple store in Taiwan at the time and they simply claimed I needed a whole new logic board which I was not willing to buy.  I only learned about the nvidia problem and the gfx app a month ago.  I did take it to an Apple repair shop here in Japan but they cited the fact that I was over the three year limit.  So now I have a unit that works, but with limited graphics and no ability to use a second monitor (you need both cards to do that).

The "Reset PRAM" method doesn't work for me, my machine experienced panic again.

If it's a GPU problem resetting PRAM won't do a thing. The motherboard has to be replaced or you have to force the graphics to Intel.

It's not a GPU or motherboard problem because it works great with 10.6.8. As soon as I installed 10.9 the failures started, as soon as I restored 10.6 they stopped.

Apple, please fix this SW problem. It's common enough that people are reporting it all over the place, it's not like we have to search and search to find one or two instances. It renders the machine unusable.

There's definitely a hardware problem with that model. I know, I have one, and I run Mavericks just fine after the motherboard replacement. Mavericks may exhibit the problem more because of the way it handles memory. If you really want to be sure, take it to a Genius Bar. They have a test for this. I'll bet though if you look at your next kernel panic you'll see GPU mentioned right near the top.

Yep I took it to the genius bar, showed them several gpu panic reports, showed them their own web page describing the gpu hw problem. They ran hw diagnostics which found no problems. I'm sure they would have liked to sell me a new mobo, but the diagnostics ran clean.

Note this problem is also being reported on machines other than mid 2010 macbook pro. I don't have any links but I do recall seeing them as I was researching this.

Then the thing for you to do would be to post your next kernel panic. One reason it could work with SL and not Mavericks is that you have some program loading at startup that's not compatible with Mavericks. I just helped someone with an ongoing kp problem the other day who was using Virtualbox, which is known to have Mavericks issues.

I have a mid 2010 macbook pro and this issue started happening to me everytime I'd process photos in Aperture, so I assumed I had the same issue.  The panic reports all reported GPU problems.  The other day I decided to install a clean build of Mavericks.  I know it's still early, but I've been processing photos since the rebuild and haven't experienced one crash.  Prior to the rebuild, it would crash almost every time I used Aperture.

Hopefully you don't have the motherboard problem and you were experiencing something like I said earlier with an incompatible program. A clean install would make sure of that.

72 hours+ without GPU panic after taking gruntetwo's suggestion and installing gfxCardStatus app last week. The MacBookPro has not gone that long without a panic since I installed Mavericks.

Also took it to the Apple store the same day. As I suspected, my time of purchase was too long ago to qualify for the logic-board replacement, which costs about $500 (even though I never had this problem till I installed Mavericks, so there's no way I could have pursued it within the purchase period).

But the Apple-store guy also acknowledged that the gfxCardStatus app is a reasonable band-aid – at least for people like me who don't need major graphics or game-playing capability.

Unfortunately gfxCardStatus is not an acceptable solution for me as I do graphics creation and video editing.

I'm sorry gfxCardStatus won't help everyone, but it looks like it'll work for me until I can upgrade to a new Mac.

GPU Panic not eliminated completely – I had 2 in the last week – but that's compared to 2-3 daily previously.

Hey check this out. Maybe they are listening?

    http://www.tapscape.com/mavericks-update-angst-os-1092-ready/

    In particular from that article:

Again on the fix side, Mavericks users have complained about both graphic driver stability and OpenGL performance issues. While Tapscape doesn’t have info on specific issues, it is known that scores of updated graphic drivers are coming in this Mavericks update.

    Hey.

Im running a 2010 MBP and suffering from constant GPU Panic Reports. I've taken it to the Mac store and they've confirmed that my logic board needs replacing. Unfortunately i fell 2 months outside of their extended warranty and they wanted to charge me upwards of 600$. What i need to know is will downgrading from Mavericks to Snow Leopard a solution? any other solutions that have worked??

Can't say for sure. Moving back to Snow Leopard worked for me but the hw diagnostics at the Apple store did not indicate a logic board problem for me.
