Q: GPU Panic report interpretation, Mavericks OS

This is from a MacBook Pro mid-2010.  The unit shuts down and restarts after between an hour and 3 hours of operation.  This is the panic report from the last shutdown.  Appreciate any interpretation anyone can offer!  Thanks.

AssaadK, see above about gfxCardStatus, which is at least a band-aid solution.

It's not for those who heavily need graphics (gaming, etc.), and it doesn't eliminate the panics completely (I've had 2 per week since I installed it vs. 2-3 daily previously), but it's something.

Well....10.9.2 is now available. Anyone tried it yet?

Yup, I'm on 10.9.2. I've been using this update for a week or so now. I still have the Panic crashes several times a day on Mavericks. Mid-2010 15" Macbook Pro. In the last 30 minutes I had two, the second within 5 minutes of restarting from the first. That is the most frequent they have ever become. Three today total.

    boarderlime,

See my post above about the faulty NVIDIA GPU found on a number of mid-2010 15" models. I'm 99% certain that's your problem.

If you'll post the latest kernel panic log (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2546), I'll be able to tell you for certain.

I found this solution on a different thread: http://gfx.io . Basically this little open source app allows you to run exclusively on the Intel GPU. Problem is that it won't work if you are running Chrome (and the Chrome helpers) or Little Snitch. I've deleted the latter and stopped using the former. My machine has been running now for about 4 hours without a crash. Previously I was getting GPU panics every 10 minutes or less !!. This seems to be a good interim solution until the logic board can be replaced.

gfxCardStatus reduced my panics to 1-2/day but did not eliminate them. However, I have now gone about 72 hours without a panic after uninstalling the app Snapz Pro for which I had a trial version that I never even used.

Disappointing. I'm staying on 10.6.8 where I never have any gpu panics until they get the graphics subsystem on Mavericks straightened out.

This was the last straw. I just ordered all my components for a custom PC. I was going to buy an iMac. At least now if a component goes out I can replace it.

Yep, I hear ya boarderlime. I'm entering this on my new Asus n550. Added a Samsung 840 EVO ssd and for $1250 have the same hw specs as the current $2600 MacBook Pro. Win 8 ***** but I've got it configured to bypass the metro ui crud, added a free 3rd party start menu, and it's quite nice. Zippy. Windows has finally caught up on the touchpad/gestures stuff, nice smooth 2 finger swipe to scoll, etc. No gpu panics, or any other panics for that matter. The graphics sw I use also runs on Windows, runs very well. I did have to install the the latest Nvidia GT750m driver to fix some bugs, but the bugs were some UI weirdness, not "lets shutdown the computer immediately".

Basically the functionality you lose going to Windows as far as I can tell is: Final Cut Pro X, and IOS app development.

I think it will hurt the resale value of my MacBook if they don't eventually get Mavericks working on it, but at this point it's just for surfing.

I'm really surprised at this to be quite honest. I figured that since OSX only has to support the official Apple hw that device support would be rock solid.

Hi All, - Just to add my disappointment and frustration to this post.Late 2011 MB Pro - same problems. 18 months old!

I have not tried the move back to Lion, or snow leopard, will try that.../  These challenges appear to have been introduced by Mavericks, but others say that AMD GPU is just plain faulty, Temperature and other issues...

Mine "panics" at least once a day, even using GFX utility

I loved my move to Mac, and treasured my MBP - now I doubt I will buy another.

    Good Luck all.

MacBook Pro affected models of the Nvidia GPU issue were 2007 and 2008.

Although the Nvidiasettlement.com site has been removed, you can access Information of the settlement and a complete list of the affected models of the defective GPU's here: http://slickdeals.net/f/2445870-nvidia-lawsuit-www-nvidiasettlement-com-includes -notebooks-from-hp-compaq-dell-aaple

Definitely leaning towards a Mavericks issue. This tech is going to be digging deeper.

I think there is a solution that will allow you to continue using your Nvidia GPU, and therefore use external displays, etc. I have tried disabling GPU switching and using the gfxCardStatus solution, but many OSX applications simply over-ride these. I applied this today after suffering the regular OSX crash and GPU panic on my mid-2010 15" MacBook Pro ever since upgrading from Mountain Lion to Mavericks. Apple introduced Memory Compression in order to make more memory available to the apps currently in use. Switching this off seems to have the effect of speeding up older Macs that have been struggling to run memory-hungry apps since upgrading OSX version and also seems to cure the GPU panic crashes. To disable memory compression open Terminal and run this command:

    sudo nvram boot-args="vm_compressor=1"

You will be prompted to enter your system password. No further response will be received, all you need to do is reboot and cross your fingers!
