Messages.app crashing

[OSX 10.9]

Hello everyone,

I was changing my font on the Messages.app application on my iCloud (iMessage) account to the "Apple Color Emoji" font, then I quit the application and when I wanted to open it again, I have those errors :

http://d.pr/i/Efi4

Then whatever the button I click, I have this error :

http://d.pr/i/FjbZ

I already tried to delete every related iChat/Messages.app .plist files on " /Users/[MyUser]/Library/Preferences/ ", but I am still having the same problem.

On the Console log, I can see that the problem is really related to the fon I selected :

Application Specific Information:

*** Terminating app due to uncaught exception 'NSInvalidArgumentException', reason: '*** setObjectForKey: object cannot be nil (key: NSFont)'

terminating with uncaught exception of type NSException

abort() called

I'd be really happy to have a solution to this !

Thanks !

Hi,

Close Messages if Open

Go to Hard Drive Name/Users/(your account)/Library/Containers/com.apple.ichat/Data/Library/Saved Application State/com.apple.ichat.savedState

Drag the contents of this folder to the Trash.

Restart Messages.

(Change the Font as soon as possible)

Hi,

You suggested earlier it is about a Font you chose ?

The app will fail to launch is Helvetica Font is turned Off or has been substituted with Helvetica Fractions.

Also if Lucida Grande is also off some windows will not display properly (mainly the Buddy lists)

Where do you think you have changed a Font ?

Any choices in Messages > Viewing should not effect the start up as they are not needed until you Send or Receive any form of Message.

I would check the Fonts in the Font Book.

You may to delete ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.ichat.plist

This will reset all the Preferences and some Menu items of the app.

My problem started when I was trying to annoy some friends, i kept making my font bigger, as soon as I set the font size to "9999", Messages started to hang for a while so I killed its process... now it wont start

I deleted ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.ichat.plist and several other configs with no luck, I might try restarting later (cant restart now due to my laptop being a web server)

HI,

That does seems to be a bit odd.

The Font for your Outgoing Messages, it's colour, the background colour of the Balloon (or other style) and the size of the font are all held in the com.apple.ichat.plist

If you open the file with Xcode you can expand this section

Try this as it is in Mavericks.

In the Finder > GO Menu hold down the ALT key and select the Library at appears.

Navigate to Containers/com.apple.ichat/Data/Library/Saved Status State/com.apple.iChat.savedState

and delete the contents.

I have the Path Bar on view in my Finder's windows.

Hi,

Try resetting the PRAM (NVRAM)

Shut down the computer.

Restart it holding down Apple/CMD ( or ⌘)+ALT( ⌥)+P+R Keys until you have heard three Start Up Bongs.
