First of all, you cannot buy AppleCare+ after the fact. You must purchase the warranty when you buy the iPad or you have up to 30 days from the date of purchase but you have to have the iPad inspected at an Apple Store before you can buy the warranty if you buy it after you purchas the iPad.

And secondly, Apple will replace the iPad with a new or refurbished iPad of the exact same type. In other words, if you had an iPad2, they will replace your iPad with a new or refurbished iPad2. You cannot change the version of iPad to another version when you get the replacement from Apple.

No. Accidental damage is not a manufacturers defect and is not covered under the standard one year warranty. You dropped the iPad, it did not fail on its own. In short, you broke it, so no they will not replace it with another one.

But if you have AppleCare+, the iPad is covered for two incidents of accidental damage and Apple will replace the iPad but you will also have to pay a $49.00 deductible.

If you had purchased apple care plus you would have paid the $49 fee for a refurbished replacement instead of the 200ish fee.

The only time anyone will get a free replacement is if there's a manufacturer's defect. And Apple's policy is (last time I knew anyway) if there is a manufacturer's defect discovered within the first month you get a new one, beyond that a refurbished one.
