Text input in maverick is not displaying German or French accents why?

Hallo There.

If I want to write in German , lets say Bach's cantate Schaffe konnen (können) sicher weiden or in French the word Sacre (Sacré) I can no longer do it by holding that key and press the # which will invoke the correct accent on this letter.Might you have the answer to this? Thank You : John Basso.
