Although a G4 iMac can be equipped with an internal AirPort or AirPort Extreme card (depending upon the exact model), it is often better to just connect an external wireless Ethernet bridge (examples include Netgear WNCE2001 and Linksys WET610N) to the Ethernet port. Modern Ethernet bridge devices are able to use the latest wireless security standards, and do not require special drivers.

Jan, that is so helpful. As a dinosaur in these matters this seems very easy - presumably I just plug it into the imac and sync with my router. Are there any settings I need to chnage in the imac or is it literally plug and play? Thanks again

    Hello,

Basically, the wireless Ethernet bridge replaces an Ethernet cable between the computer and the router. Instead, there is a wireless (Wi-Fi) connection. The wireless Ethernet bridge (also known as a gaming adapter or a media adapter/bridge) has to be configured to connect under the security protocol (such as a variant of WPA) that your router is using. This is typically done via a web user interface using a standard web browser. Often there are various "easy setup" options as well. A wireless Ethernet bridge can be used with almost any device with an Ethernet port, under almost any operating system.

    Good luck!
