Connecting an IrDA peripheral to my MacBook Pro?

Recently, I got into SCUBA diving and just finished buying all of my gear. As part of the package, I got a dive computer which is supposed to connect to a PC via infrared. I know that the port on the front of the Macbook Pro is only for receiving information from the apple remote so I'm not even trying to go that route. I've been looking all over the place online to see if someone (anyone) supports a usb IrDA periph that will work on an intel based mac. My diving instructor lent me the one that he uses with his PC (Uwatec MA-660) and it works beautifully with JTrak (the divelog software) through Virtual PC on my G5 tower. There is also a great looking version of JTrak for macintosh (which is also universal) but I have no way of connecting to my dive computer. And of course, Virtual PC doesn't run on intel based macs. I'd so much rather use native macintosh software anyway. Does anybody have any idea if there is such a thing out there or at the very least when something like it would be coming out? Or where to look?

Thank you much!
Jim.

I wanted to follow-up on my original post for the folks who still haven't resolved this issue. I returned the Smart IR device to the dive shop when they called me and said they had one which was compatible with Macs. I brought it home and snapped it into the usb on my MacBook Pro, installed the driver and JTrak and it works perfectly with my dive computer. I had to hold the computer pretty close to the dongle though but it brings in all the info from the dives on it. Pretty cool. I don't know if the ir dongle works with other apps because I'm not running anything which requires it. Anyhow, the product is somewhat difficult to find online and it's not really named well. It's called "Smart Infra Red Device" (How helpful!) and it looks like a small tube of lipstick. But I did manage to find it online at

I hope this is helpful to everyone.

Hello, I have a similar question.

I have a Uwatec SmartCom, a PowerBook and a PC laptop. The PC laptop with a built-in IrDA reads data from the SmartCom just fine. However, my PowerBook does not recognize the SmartCom. Do I need a special driver or is the built-in IrDA just for networking. Will I have to buy a USB to IrDA for the PowerBook.

Has anyone used the PowerBook built-in IrDA for anything other than networking between apple computers?
