Bizarre file arrangement in Finder

Hi,

I too faced the same issue in Yosemite OS. None of the methods like Arranging By or Sorting By helped me out.

Finally I just dragged the icons and arranged it manually and it fixed the issue!!!

I haven't updated my operating system. Am sure Apple might of released patches to fix this issue.

It has been a year now and they still haven't fixed this infuriating "feature".

Drag a couple photos to the desktop, then you go to a website to load photos, select desktop and it shows you one photo from months ago under "today" with nothing next to it, then there is last month and no matter how hard you look the one you just put on the desktop IS NOT VISIBLE IN THE DESKTOP FOLDER!!! without manually changing the sorting option. Its becoming increasingly hard for a life time Apple customer to grasp on the naive hope as Apple keeps jabbing at us with crap that we don't want like computers with no ports, upgradability and now no ability to find files. C'mon Apple, "if it ain't broke, don't fix it."

Just to let you know you're not alone - I am also seeing this exact problem and it's driving me crazy! Hopefully 10.9.1 will come along soon and fix this.

I've had this issue ever since they introduce "Arrange by...", as for whatever reason, there's never been a way to save this view option for all folders. Mavericks has made it much worse, as it continually forgets this preference for folders I've already set to Arrange by Kind, Sort by Name.

It's such a clear, obvious way to arrange and sort files, I can't understand why it's not the default and why it is impossible to make this view stick.

In the meantime, I have found this strategy to be the quickest way to get a folder back to this view:

1. Click on the button, and select Arrange by Name
2. Click on the button, and re-select Arrange by Kind
3. Option + Click on the button, and select Sort by Kind
4. Option + Click on the button, and re-select Sort by Name

This resets the view for me to Arrange by Kind, Sort by Name.

But, yes, in Mavericks, it's only a matter of time before it re-sorts itself into some ungodly random arrangement. It's infuriorating to have to do over and over again, so I hope that this is addressed soon.

Same exact thing happens to me 😠. I always have to re-arrange my folders/files by clicking on the sort-arrow. It's getting very frustrating becuase I like to keep my computer organized!!!! It's not a big deal but its very anoying. Hopefully Apple fixes this issue in the next update.

YES! Mavericks is a psychotic mess in Finder. Nearly EVERY time I open it, files and folders are in a different order. I've literally watched them rearrange before my eyes! Sometimes it's alphabetical, sometimes reverse alphabetical and then back to alphabetical. I've done NOTHING.

I spend a quarter of my day just navigating folders for work. This has doubled that time!

I have/want them ordered by kind. Folder lists (subfolders) used to be at top, now it's (mostly) Word docs, then folders, then PDF docs.

Anyone know of a way to at least get the folders back above other documents? (Seriously, this is over two thousand years of standard hierarchical organization prototocol of categories and sub categories and Apple thought they had a better way...)

Same problem, ever since the upgrade to Mavericks. It is beyond infuriating. Such a stupid thing to break and then not notice they broke it. Do they not even use Finder over there at Apple?

Hmmm. I've been using TotalFinder with Mavericks (and long before) and it defintiely does NOT fix the bizarre, random way that Mavericks will re-arrange files and folders on my machine.

Though I must say that it is otherwise a wonderful product! I can't blame the developers for not being able to fix Mavericks' weirdness.

I have been doing my nut over this one as well and it has been driving me insane; but i may have found an answer!

instead of using arrange by kind, I have changed the view settings to "arrange by application" and then "sort by name" and it seems to have stabilised and stopped randomly switching everything around of its own accord and returned to how "arrange by kind" used to look. so far, so good.

Send Apple feedback. They won't answer, but at least will know there is a problem. If enough people send feedback, it may get the problem solved sooner.

Same here. Every since the "arrange by" option was introduced. I don't get how this is allowed to slip for so long on such a fundamental interface of OSX.

The "arrange by kind" option also used to have the problem that the 'kind' headers (i.e. 'Folders', 'Images', 'PDF Documents', 'Other', etc.) used to sometimes disappear and sometimes turn into folder icons that couldn't be selected. At least this appears to have stabilized in Mavericks.

You would think the Finder could get the alphabet straight. How difficult could it be to sort this out? (pardon the pun).
