Q: Problems with "Printers & Scanners" preference pane under Mavericks

Since installing OS X Mavericks I can no longer print to our WiFi enabled Epson WF-7515 network printer, and attempting to access the "Printers & Scanners" preference pane in System Preferences either produces a Preferences Error which reads "Could not load Printers & Scanners preference pane", or gives a corrupt version of the preference pane which then in turn leads to a different Preferences Error reading "There was an error in Printers & Scanners preference pane".

* Restarting in Safe Mode gives same results.

    Just set up hotfolders from Versaworks, it's really very easy and it means no print driver needed.

    I hear what you're saying, stueey, and this is indeed what we used to do. However, Versaworks has extreme trouble with certain combinations of cut paths, transparency, and drop shadows in PDFs, whereas printing direct never does.

    That's funny, I find it the other way around!

    I find that so long as I save a PDF compitable with pdf 1.3 and choose the high res transparency flattener preset that al the paths and transparencies come out fine.

    Could someone please send me a copy of the VersaWorks ppd? My email is jblancha@mac.com, and I'll try to figure why it's causing these problems. Thank you.

    Another possibility is to reset the printing system manually:

    $ sudo launchctl unload /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/org.cups.cupsd.plist

    $ sudo rm /etc/cups/printers.conf

    $ sudo launchctl load /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/org.cups.cupsd.plist

    Hope this is helpful.

    Just to add something for the Terminal-shy people among us, you can skip the steps to make all files (in)visible, (steps 1-3 and 7-8 above) like this:

    In the Finder, choose Go->Go to folder... (shift-Apple-G)

    type: "/etc/cups" in the box (without quotes)

    The Finder will open a window to the /etc/cups folder where you can find these files to delete.

    Carolyn,  The first time I followed your great hint, it did not work for me.  After several more tries I was frustrated. Today when I tried your directions again and sent the "plist" file to trash, I noticed when I left the library file open that the com.apple.systempreferences.plist file kept reinserting itself in the folder. I clicked on the printer I wanted to use and then deleted the file again. When I had the "plist" file out, I was able to use the printer I wanted to use and to set it as the default.  I suppose the file needed to be refreshed after the deletion.  Maybe someone understands this action better, but for now that is how I was able to work around the problem.

    If anyone is interested, I have modded a Canon PPD to work with Versaworks on Mavericks. I'm no coder but editing PPD's is pretty simple and this one will give you all the functions you need to print from Adobe Suite (or any postscript savvy program) to Versaworks with custom sizes, PS Ver3 and all the basics that Versaworks needs, using Mavericks. If you want a copy just send me an email and I will send it to you, steven@magnascan.com.au

    It comes with no guarantees but will do the job until Roland in their wisdom decides to update their PPD.

    I had the same problem with printer preferences.  Every time I tried to access it I got an error message.  I tried all of the steps described on this thread and none of them worked for me.  I deleted the file "com.apple.systempreferences.plist", removed all of the installed printers, and deleted the hidden files "printers.conf" and "printers.conf.0"  - Nothing worked for me.

    What cured the issue for me was when I opened "Sharing" in system preferences and noticed that "Printer Sharing" was checked.  I unchecked that box and suddenly the Printers & Scanners preferences worked.  Once I had added my printers again, I was able to re-check the "Printer Sharing" box without further problems.

    I hope this helps at least some of you.

    This message is for "CAMOKID" -

    Did you have any problems with your computer crashing after following the steps you recommended to correct the "Printers and Scanners Preference Pane" error messages? I am having the same problem and would like to use your suggestion.  An Apple Tech Support said my computer might crash, but we could use Time Machine to recover data.

    Please advise.  Thanks so much.

    try this if you still have the problem,

    I read this post when I locked  myself out of the preference pane trying to install my driver to run  VersaWorks. My business partner assisted me in fixing the problem. I  will try and explain his doings.

    I have Text Wrangle on my Mac so this helped:

    go to library/printers and open up InstalledPrinters.plist

    Now  since I knew that it was the VersaWorks printer that i had installed  and that was what had locked me out of my printer preferences, it was a  no-brainer as to which one had messed up my printer preferences button.

    when you click on the .plist, Text Wrangler should open and you will see code.

    PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE Print the page so as if something happens you can retype the fields as needed.

    As you read down the code, you will see <key>InstalledPrinters</key>

    find the printer that locked you out of your printer preference pane and erase the line i.e.-

    <string>RolandVersaWorks</string>

    below the Installed Printers it says

    <key>Manufacturers</key>

    find the code i.e.-

    <string>Roland</string>

    and remove it.

    Click File, Save.

    Open your Settings Menu, Printers and Scanners and there it is! Problem solved, least it did for me. Good luck

    Jetman:

    Thanks so much for your recommendation under "Problems with Printers and Scanners".  Prior to receiving an email of,your solution I was able to enlist the help of a Senior Tech through phone support.  He helped correct my issue perfectly.  He actually used some of the suggestions in "Camokid"'s previous post, which referred to a fix  in Japanese.  Thanks again!

    Updated Mavericks last night (2014-2-25). Can now add Roland Versaworks using the original PPD. Add it as a Windows printer. Someone seems to have fixed something!

    I can confirm that the most recent Mavricks update has fixed the Roland PPD issue. Our workflow is back up and running perfectly printing right from Illustrator CC. Thanks Puttyhead!
