Viewer Screen Black after Mavericks and Apertutre updates

Hello All, I have updated to Mavericks on my home iMac that is a few years old, and a new one at work that is 6 months old. Everything was fine and then I updated to Aperture 3.5. Now on BOTH machines, I am able to see all of my images in browser view fine. In split view the images in the filmstrip at the bottom of the screen are still fine, but the main image being viewed is black. In full viewer the image is completely black. It will indicate loading, show all photo info at the bottom of the viewer, but load as a black image.I can use an external editor PS5 without issue. I have completed the three step for the library first aid. When opening Aperture, the image may flash on the screen for a split second, and then show as black.

Apple support only seemed interested in having me sign up for Apple Care, even though this is a software bug, so this left me a bit unhappy. As a photographer that really needs Aperture running correctly, I'm at a standstill and may need to move to Adobe as an emergency solution.

What version of Aperture did you upgrade from? Does the problem happen even on newly imported images or just on the images that were in the library before the upgrade?

Try selecting one or two of the images and run a Reprocess original on the images to see if that clears the problem,

Upgraded from most recent version of Aperture 3 on both machines. Shot a State field hockey final last night, and these have the same issue. Just tried the reprocess without success...

Weird it is happening on two separate machines. Was the library from one machine copied to the other? What camera and are the originals Raw?

Try making a new empty library and import a few images into it, what happens? If it still fails there try running as a new user or from the Guest account if you have that enabled. Start Aperture and add a few images to a new library, what happens?

Also try looking at one of the original files in Preview, is it OK there?

Thanks, I'll give that a try. Yes, some of the images were exported to create a library on the newer machine, so that may be part of the puzzle.

A raw file exported to the desktop opens fine in Preview. I also exported a project as a new library, and opened that. Same issue persists; view browser fine, but no main image view.

Have you tried it when logged in as a different user? This will help narrow it down to a problem with your environment or a problem that is system wide.

If it runs OK as the new user try removing the Aperture preference file See Aperture 3: Troubleshooting Basics for directions on how to do that.

Create a new user account in the Users&Groups System Preferences, or enable the Guest account there.

Ok, opened as a guest user, imported two TIFF files from a USB drive, and they open fine !

Then try deleting the preference file. Follow the instructions in the link I provided above.

Was the newer machine set up by copying the files over from the older system?

Files were exported to a hard drive, and imported into the new machine.

That would explain both machines having the same symptoms. Try the preference file and post back.

I would suggest restarting the system if you are going to trash your preferences. This will clear the cache file in Mavericks. Have you tried to make an adjustment on the images displaying the Black viewer? You might also try deleting and then updating the Previews on the image to see if it renders. Though, it does appear that there might be a permissions issue since you are moving between machines and the effects are the same.

Thanks, I failed to empty trash and re-start after deleting that Aperture plist. Just went through it and re-started. It looks like it is working correctly.

I'll try this on the home Mac tonight and see what happens.
