Mavericks and Outlook - repeated download of same emails

Since my Mavericks upgrade my outlook 2011 download duplicate emails that have already been received. I rebuilt my identity database and it did not help. I am on Outlook 14.3.8 (Outlook 2011). Does anyone know how to either fix this issue permanently or roll back the Mavericks upgrade?

Hi - I tried this for starters, but it didn't really cut it. Opened Outlook for Mac 2011 and went into Tools/Rules, and deselected "Dupe Messages," which did the trick. I also went into "Accounts/Advanced," and set the remove from server setting to "One Week." It's been over a week now, and not a single duped message. This computer is not on an Exchange server - just your average pc on a wireless home network. I left the "Prevent App Nap" setting alone since it seems to work in tandem with the delected "Dupe Messages" option. Why go looking for trouble, right?

Good luck!

i'm just encountering this issue (having just installed Maverick) - constant connection errors and duplicate emails.

i so appreciate the tips posted and have just done the app nap step - just to maximize my chances of success, i'm trying now also to do the internet account step that you Terry first posted, but my 'internet account' box doesn't have a control panel or option - it just lists my email accounts and offers the system to add others. am i looking in the wrong place or is this a format change since your post?

if relevant - i am completely dependent on continuing to use pop rather than imap format (for reasons i'm glad to share if anyone cares) and pray to avoid having to reinstall anything.

thank you!!

Back into the discussion... I have had no problems since mid-January, but they are back.. In January, I let the emails download, and went through and weeded all of the old ones out... twice.

Then about a week ago, Outlook lost contact with my Main Identity, and built a new one (Identity 1). It had asked me to rebuild my Identity, but I got that sorted out with no problems.

Then it did again yesterday, but there was no new Identity 1. I fixed that (went back to the last backup). A few hours later, Outlook decided to download all my emails while I was actually working. (I think I had switched over from another application, but Outlook was running in the background.) I have just re-deleted all the extras AGAIN.

Another symptom is that often when I try to select a message in Outlook, it flips me over to Finder, and when I go back to Outlook, it repeats the behaviour. At that point, the only fix is to Restart.

Are these all connected? Who knows. My ISP (yes, they said it was them... see earlier) is of course out-to-lunch on this one.

Thinking about switching email clients, but it seems that other clients (other than perhaps gmail) are as bad. Thoughts on this last point?

We discussed this back in January I changed all my emails to IMAP and have not had the problem since January. Also it is really nice if you use several devices like I do (Air Book, iPhone, iPad) if you open an email on any device it shows opened on all devices which saves a lot of time because you don't have to open the email on all devices to eliminate the notifications of new mail that you have already looked at on another device. Anyways IMAP has worked for me on all four of my email accounts Comcast, Outlook, ATT, Gmail. Good Luck with whatever you decide to do!

In the Outlook toolbar, click on Tools to get to Outlook Preferences (you might need to select Show All to see the categories. Then, under E-Mail, select Rules, and then uncheck Dupe Messages if it is checked. That did the trick for us, and we haven't had a duped e-mail since late February - the Inbox had close to 19,000 e-mails in it when my wife first brought the problem to my attention.

Good luck!

What if one has no rules to edit? I see no way to add them or somehow specify NOT to DL duplicates.

I do have a web-based (vs. Outlook) fix, though, if you are willing to adjust your behavior a bit. Rather than leave all your messages in your (Yahoo!, Gmail, AOL, etc.) online Inbox, you can create a new folder called "Read Inbox" or "Received Inbox" ... or frankly, whatever you'd like, and routinely move your Inbox emails to that folder so that the only dupes DLed are those new ones coming into your regular Inbox. I know this is a bit more labor-intensive and possibly inconvenient, but for those for whom the other fixes have not worked (like me), it will get rid of the problem. I pretty much just use Outlook to categorize and file emails by project or subject for ease of future reference, and going through all those dupes was a major pain. Then, after none of the recommended fixes worked for me, I figured I'd just mechanically remove any possible dupes to DL.

Anyway, for what it's worth .... good luck!

slfnyc -

The only thing that worked for me was checking "prevent app nap" box in the "Get Info" window for Outlook.

Originally, we tried various schemes of checking and unchecking things in the System Preferences "Internet Accounts" pane, but that did not fix things, or only fixed them on a temporary basis. I wouldn't worry about the settings in the "Internet Accounts" pane. If you are getting connection error messages in addition to the duplicates, it has been the checking of the "prevent app nap" box that has most often fixed things. This seems to be especially true if you have just installed Mavericks, as you mention.

You might want to go back and check the "Get Info" window box for Outlook to be certain the "prevent app nap" box is still checked. As I recall, when I first checked the "prevent app nap," it didn't "stick" the first time. Personally, I do an immediate restart after I make a change like this.
