I have a genuine ipod lightining cable but it won't charge my ipod

I purchased my ipod about 3 months ago but I have been unable to charge my ipod recently as I get a message saying that I cannot use the cable to charge it and that it is not certified. I am using the cable I got with my ipod so why is this happening? I have an ipod touch 5g on IOS7
