Q: Mavericks Finder window- and shadow-rendering issues-Screenshots

Is anyone having these issues?  Is there a solution?

If this is monitored by Apple engineers, please take note:

Mac Desktop with "noise" in place of file icons

See:  http://tvstrategies.com/mavericks/Mavericks_Desktop_icons.jpg

Finder windows with black drop-shadows instead of gradient shadows.  The black dropshadow moves with the window when the window is moved:

See:  http://tvstrategies.com/mavericks/Mavericks_Window_shadow.jpg

A Firefox window that renders as noise, behind an Excel window

See: http://tvstrategies.com/mavericks/Mavericks_Window_noise.jpg

These do not impact my ability to use the Mac, which works fine.

These issues may be related my other post from yesterday - see:  https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5503570

Thank you

I went to the apple store.  They ran diagnostics on my MBP.  No issues in the general test.  Then they ran a test that took about 15 minutes that focused on my GPU, as that is the most likely faulty component considering the shadow rendering issue.  My computer passed that with flying colors as well.

Apple genius said that they could keep it for a 24 hour more intesive diagnostic test, but his suggestion was to take it home and erase/reinstall mavericks and see if that fixed the issue.  I did that.  Cleared whole system.  Left all data and settings on my backup drive.

After a fresh install it happened again within 6 hours.  Boo.

I hope for a software update that addresses this.  I fear that it is an issue with the GPU in our MBP's.  There are other threads that suggest that might be the case and our GPU's have trouble handling the more intensive graphics in Mavericks.  Come on Apple.  Please step up and address this as a known issue.

    iMac

    27-inch, Mid 2010

Processor: 2.8 ghz Intel Core i5

    Memory: 16gb

Graphics: ATI Radeon HD 5750 1024mb

    OS X 10.9(13A603)

I didn't see where anyone had reported the problem on an iMac but I am. It did begin with my update to Maverick.

It started out with random display artifacts in the form of flashing or steady small square boxes in seemingly random locations. If I attempted to capture a screen shot they'd disappear. After a few weeks, I started seeing corrupted Finder windows.

I reinstalled the O/S and it seemed to clear up...but only for a few hours. The next day it was back. Tonight I managed to capture the following shot.

I've run extensive test on the RAM as well as the video card and cache. No errors or issues have been found.

Nothing I've found posted seems to rememdy the situation.

The problem is the Automatic Graphics Switching. (As posted in Frank23456:https://discussions.apple.com/message/24085505?ac_cid=tw123456#24085505)

Head over to your System Preferences > Energy Saver, and unselect "Automatic graphics Switching". I find when I toggle that it will solve the problem.

It's not a permanent fix, but it clears the scramble. This will have to do until Apple provides a permanent solution.

Before I posted I tried your solution. I actually should have posted my reply on the other thread.

Unfortunately the option for Auotmate Graphics Switching does not exist in System Preferneces for an iMac, at least my model. Perhaps it can be addressed at the OS level but I've not found a corresponding command.

    Thanks

This is not just a MBP problem! It also happens on my iMac after upgrading to Mavericks!

Sometimes the computer becomes totally unusable and a restart is necessary!!

Apple this only happens with Mavericks, so please fix it!

This solved it for me, it became clear that the problem only ocured when using on battery power. When it was plugged in to the socket i had no problems. Turning Automatic Graphics Switching of when on battery power clears the problem.

Bad news: 10.9.1 Graphics issues not repaired!

The issue discussed in this thread continues.

    Mavericks 10.9.1 graphics.jpg

This workaround [ System Preferences > Energy Saver > Automatic Graphics Switching (off) ] is not acceptable to me, since it reduces battery life significantly.

Let's hope that Apple is monitoring this thread and issues a dot-release, rather than having us wait until 10.9.2.

    Thank you.

Try using gfxCardStatus or leaving an application that uses the discrete card (like VLC or twitter) open.

I am experiencing the same issue as well.

I will post my Mac's specs in case that helps:

    Model:          15" MacBook Pro, Mid 2010 (6,2)

Processor:    2.4 GHz Intel Core i5 (dual core)

Memory:       4 GB 1067 MHz DDR

Graphics:     Intel HD Graphics 288 MB graphics

                         NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M

Toggling "Automatic Graphics Switching" temporary cleared the problem for me.

    Hello,

It happens to me as well, on a Mac Pro (Mid-2008), with a NVIDIA Quadro FX 4800 1.5GB VRAM Graphic card. The only workaround I found, to avoid rebooting, is relaunching the Finder (Apple Menu/Force to Quit, select Findr and click Relaunch).

Annoying :-(, and was expecting 10.9.1 to fix it, but not!!

Thanks...that helped.  Still a bit of scrambling up near the top.  Have a March 2010 MBPro 15 inch.  It appears a lot of the 2010 machines are having this issue.  Hoping for a fix soon.

I fixed this by changing my desktop wallpaper back to the default mavericks wallpaper. it's not happened since. In fact it doesn't happen with any of the Apple default walpapers.

Why there is no such option ("Automatic graphics Switching") in my Energy Saving panel??

I don't understand. Anyone can help?

I'm using the default Mavericks wallpaper since I upgraded. I have the same issue. So I don't think that's a solution.

While I was using Chrome as a browser, I never had this problem (still with Mountain Lion). Recently I switched to Safari and that's when I started getting all the scrambling. Especially around the terminal window.

I also have the Mid-2010 15" MacBook Pro and have been experiencing the graphics glitches since switching to Mavericks.

I have been to the Apple Store about four times in the last month:

    1) We addressed possible hardware issues, replacing my logic board, all of my RAM, the bottom shell of my computer since the shell was dented, and the battery since that was also kind of failing. I restored from a backup, and 24 hours later, the issue returned.

    2) We addressed more possible hardware fixes, replacing my logic board again as well as my display. I restored from a backup, and 24 hours later, the issue returned.

    3) This time we decided to take a software approach. We cleared my Mac and did another clean install of Mavericks, and instead of doing a backup, individually redownloaded my applications from the app store and the Microsoft website for my Office apps. We also dragged over my music and libraries and documents. The problem came back in less than 24 hours this time.

    4) I went back yesterday, and they decided to "partition" my laptop or something. Now I have two operating systems on my laptop that I switch between so I can use my iCloud with Pages for my papers and stuff. They wanted to see if the problems would recurr in Mountain Lion, so that is what I have been trying since last night.

The guy I had last night said that version 10.9.2 of Mavericks would come out soon but that he didn't think it was set to address any graphical issues. I'm pretty sure the issue will not occur in Mointain Lion since the problem started when I downloaded Mavericks. Mountain Lion seems a lot slower so far, and I don't really want to have to restart my computer all the time to switch operating systems, but it is what it is. We will see what happens.
