RuffiansRide,

The manual is not going to help you figure out how to burn a DVD. Apple discontinued iDVD several years ago and no longer supports it and in version 10 of iMovie has removed all references to iDVD or burning DVDs.

That said, iDVD stil works beautifully and remains the best option for creating nice-looking DVDs on a Mac.

You said that everything appears to be uploading to iCloud. Have you tried unchecking "Automatically upload content to iCloud" in iMovie's Preferences?

Here is a step by step on how to create a DVD from iMovie 10 using iDVD 7.1.2. If you do not have iDVD, you can probably substitute Toast everywhere I used iDVD (I don't have Toast so can't verify this).

1. Create a project in iMovie 10.0.1

2. Go to File>Share>File... and for Size choose Large 540P (960 x 540) and click Next

3. Choose a location on the hard drive to save the file to.

4. Wait for the blue circle activity indicator to finish.

5. In Finder, verify that iMovie created an MP4 file in the location specified in step 3.

6. Open iDVD and click "Create New Project."

7. Give the project a name and save it to your hard drive.

8. Drag the file you created earlier from the Finder into your iDVD project window.

(or go to File>Import>Video... and choose your video there)

9. Make any adjustments to drop zones, etc.

10. Click the burn button.

11. Insert a DVD and let it do its thing.

This produces a working DVD for me.

Here are my software specs:

OS X 10.9 Mavericks

iMovie 10.0.1

iDVD 7.1.2

If you've followed my step-by-step posted earlier in this thread and it doesn't produce a working DVD, your problem lies outside of my experience and someone else will have to help you. Here are the steps again:

1. Create a project in iMovie 10.0.1 (or 10.0.2)

2. Go to File>Share>File... and for Size choose Large 540P (960 x 540) and click Next

3. Choose a location on the hard drive to save the file to.

Why is there no iDVD on my new Mac? How do I get it and how do I install it?

To burn a DVD with iDVD from the latest version of iMovie, you have to export the movie using the Export button and select 480p as the size. Open iDVD and start a new project, then drag that exported movie file into the iDVD menu window, avoiding any drop zones you see.

I've now also spent the better part of two days trying to convert a video from tape to digital in iMovie and then burn a dvd. And I agree that a manual would be nice for iMovie 10. In the meantime, here's what ended up working for me:

Instead of sharing the movie and creating another mpeg-4 file, I opened the package contents of the iMovie Library.

Then I selected the project, opened the folder called Original Media and in there is a .mov file which is the movie I wanted to burn.

Now, the rest worked because I have Toast Titanium: I right clicked on the .mov file and one option was "Toast It" which I did. The rest is simply using Toast to create a dvd which can be played on both computers and a regular machine wired into a TV.

When I used share and created an mp4 file, Toast wouldn't accept it. That seems to be another of iMovie 10's endearing features, that it creates files of the right types that can't be read by other applications that accept those files. So I don't know who knows why this was so, but I'm happy that I could finally get a finished product and I hope this might help others until Apple does some real improving of iMovie 10.

The easiest way I have found to add Chapter Markers to an iMovie 10.x project and then burn to DVD is to:

1. export the iMovie to a file.

2. Fire up Apple Compressor (purchase here)

3. Add your Chapter Markers (search help for Add Marker). There is an option to import them from a file.

4. Select the DVD output format.

5. In the "Job Action" / "When Done", select "Create DVD". You can either specify the creation of an disk img file or burning directly to a DVD.

I'm afraid I had the same results. The exports from iMovie wouldn't play in Quicktime and I was puzzled about that in an earlier post to this thread. So far, as I read, I keep going back to what worked for me: open the package contents of the iMovie library, open the specific project, open "original media" and drop that .mov file into Toast.

I didn't realize that iDVD was no longer even included in the system package.

What I did - it worked for me!!! (research based on all the info in previous posts)

create new folder (so you can see the file created using finder when you 'share')

in Imovie, Share, file option SD 480 - this will create an MP4 file - to the folder you created

note - if the file does not appear in the designated folder you created in finder then close Imovie - open and do the share again.

(I found that sometimes imovie appeared to do nothing.)

Now - it takes ages for the file to be created in full -during which I could see no indication that anything was happening,

if you close imovie then the file is lost, or incomplete so that it is unreadable by anything. so don't close it.

When the file is 'shared' i.e.complete then a message is flagged up and quicktime player opens.

You can then import the 'video' file into idvd.

After many attempts trying to figure it out, I think I have it!! And it is quite simple...

After you "share" your movie project and click next, it will ask you where you want to save your movie. Remember where you saved it and what you named it. After it is finished sharing, go to the Finder and find your movie. Then you simply, right click it, or control + mouse click, and it will give you many options including: Get Info, Open With, Move to Trash... and "BURN (name of movie) to a disk"

Once you click on it, it will ask you to insert a disk and it is over and done with from there!!

I'm trying to burn a DVD also using iMovie 10 (2013) on a new driveless MacBook Pro, which does not come with iDVD. I am able to select the project which is listed in iMovie Library, then click share (among import, create, share buttons at top of iMovie), and choose "File." Once that was done, an MP4 of my movie shows up in my Documents folder. When I right click, there is a burn to disc option, but when I click it says the disc will be playable on a Mac or Windows PC. No good. I'll report back if I find a solution.

A f%$% manual would be nice. The iMovie documentation here on the site is outdated and sends you looking for iDVD.
