Late 2013 retina MacBook Pro constantly restarting when in sleep mode

So I just got my brand new specced out retina MacBook Pro in the mail last night. I began setting it up but didn't finish before I had to go to bed. I left it with the screen closed (and assumed it would go into sleep mode soon after), an external hard drive hooked up, and plugged into the power adapter, and went to bed. During the night, it woke me up perhaps 10 times or so by making the startup sound and spinning up the external drive. The only time a Mac makes that sound is when it starts up, so as far as I can tell, it kept crashing during the night (presumably from trying to wake to do stuff in power nap mode), starting up, going to sleep, and repeating the cycle. When I turned it on in the morning, it gave me a message saying that it restarted due to a sleep to wake failure. Is this a known issue? Is there a way to fix it? Is the laptop defective? Or is it a software issue? Should I take it into an Apple store to figure it out?

As for TimeMachine, I already set that up with my AirPort Time Capsule. The external drive just has all my stuff from my old computer. I don't remember if it ever asked me whether to use that drive for TimeMachine or not while I had it hooked up. It may have when I first hooked it up and I declined or it may have not since I set it up with the Time Capsule. It seems to me that it's probably juat hving issues partially waking up to do Power Nap tasks. I'm going to put it to sleep without anything except the power adapter hooked up and see what happens after a few hours. AFAIK, power nap only works with AC power.

I tried to let it sleep at work while plugged in and nothing happened. One more thing I remembered: I also had it hooked up to an external monitor via HDMI at night. I know video drivers sometimes cause issues with sleep/wake on different systems (had that on Linux before). So could being hooked up to HDMI cause wake issues? I'll have to experiment by hooking and unhooking the things hooked up to it last night and see what might be the culrpit. Unless someone knows this issue already or can help narrow it down?

You have 14 days to return the computer w/no questions asked. Plus you have 90 days of FREE phone tech support on top of your standard 1 year warranty unless you also purchased AppleCare which gives you an additional 2 years of coverage plus FREE phone support.

Strongly suggest that you take FULL advantage of the above before it runs out. Let Apple deal w/the problems.

I'll try that again tonight. I had it on sleep last night with nothing hooked up and no crashes. If the HD just spins up every hour, that might make sense, but it crashed first, then spun up the HD. I think it didn't even get to TimeMachine, but naturally upon startup, all HDs will be initialized. We'll just have to expirement again tonight.

I'll call Apple and see what they say. If the laptop itself isn't faulty, I wouldn't want to go through the hassle of returning it and then setting up a new one (possibly waiting for another to come in if they don't have the same configuration at the Apple store). I'm a web developer and I already got my whole system tuned to develop, and if this can be solved without replacing the machine, that would be nice. I'll definitely take advantage of what Apple can offer me even if I need to do that though. Thank you for the information.

Just have a single external drive connected via USB2...did you ever uncover what the issue is?

I checked the System Diagnostic Reports in the Console.

I noticed 7 successive Sleep Wake Failures during the last 24 hours, and 2 some other day.

I did not observe this problem before even though I left my MBP several times powered on on my desk.

The only change I can think of is the external USB 3 HD docking with 2 HD connected to the port on the right hand side, because I usually do not leave it connected.

I have now disconnected it and will wait if the problem happens again.

I will post an update shortly.
