Sound on ipad only works with headphones

I have an ipad three with ios7. When headphones aren't in the volume bar goes away and when I try the volume buttons it's just a grey box that appears. When I use headphones it's perfectly fine. I have tried a hard reset and I made sure everything is ok in the setting please help.
